Victoria, BC - Patrol officers are warning the public and investigating after an ATM skimmer was discovered at a high-volume ATM in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
Officers were called by staff at the Tourist Information Centre, located at 812 Wharf Street, after a passerby discovered a suspicious device attached to the card input at the ATM located there. Staff turned the device over to officers who recognized it as an ATM skimmer.
ATM skimmers are often deployed with a camera to record potential victims entering their PINs. Officers searched the area but did not locate a camera. It is not known at this time how long the skimmer was at the ATM, or how many cards may be impacted.
If you used the ATM at 812 Wharf Street, you are urged to check your banking information and report any suspicious transactions to your financial services provider immediately and report the incidents by calling our non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654.
The “wiggle test” is a simple step you can take to protect yourself against these types of crimes. When inserting your card into an ATM, grasp and gently wiggle the card receptacle. If it is loose or comes free, it is likely a skimmer. Notify the owner and call police.

i suspect the defence will not call any witnesses. they'll argue that the crown has not proved their case.
i'm wrong. andrew berry is on the stand testifying in his own defence.
cfax is tweeting lots of what he says: https://twitter.com/cfax1070

I suppose the defense is betting that the idea of vengeful gangsters in the house will be enough to raise reasonable doubt about Berry.

Saanich Police have released a statement regarding several reports of counterfeit $100 Canadian bills being passed in stores. The suspect or suspects are making small value purchases and paying with a $100 bill. The bills are counterfeit but are convincing enough at first glance, that merchants are accepting them as tender. The suspect gets change back and leaves with legitimate money and the purchase. It is only after the suspect is gone that the merchant realizes the bank note is a fake.
In the photo examples is of one of the fake bills where the transparent areas have been cut out of legitimate bills of lesser value, and then taped or glued into a forged bill.
A close up of the vertical transparent panel clearly shows the number 10 repeated throughout. If it was a legitimate $100 bill, that number would be 100.
The transparent maple leaf has clearly been cut out and adhered to the bill
The Bank of Canada provides excellent information on the various security features included on all bank notes. Follow this link to learn more about it:

And if you do receive one of these counterfeit bills, put it into an envelope and call police.

he is providing a story about a gambling debt to a mysterious asian man. and says he quit his white collar bc ferries job in order to cash out his pension to pay it off. and that the asian man's helpers insisted on storing a bag or two at his home and later wanted a set of apartment keys.

Did we hear any of this alibi as evidence from the prosecution?

We heard that a couple months before the murders, that the mother sent an email to a friend where she said that "My gut tells me he's in a very bad place and may have people after him, re: gambling debts."
I don't think it's as far fetched as it sounds. Loan sharks like "Paul" certainly do exist in our community and people like Berry are exactly the sort of people they target.

no. but the defence is not required to disclose anything. the crown will be permitted to cross-examine now though.
perhaps he confided in someone. if that witness comes forward it will help his case. him quitting his good white collar job to get his pension money supports this alibi though. that he didn't confide in his sister because she is a police officer is also plausable.

Was there a murder weapon found at the scene? Seems like it would be pretty difficult to self-inflict wounds to that degree and then hide the weapon.

So somebody just killed my daughters and I don’t bother to tell the police everything I know as soon as possible so they can find the killer(s)?
perhaps you know that it was your actions that caused it (not paying back the loan shark on time). so instead you just try to kill yourself and then your pain of guilt is over.

DNA samples taken from blood on a knife involved in the deaths of Chloe and Aubrey Berry matches DNA taken from Andrew Berry, the girls’ father, a murder trial heard Monday.

I think it is exactly this that the defence is going for. To create reasonable doubt.perhaps you know that it was your actions that caused it (not paying back the loan shark on time). so instead you just try to kill yourself and then your pain of guilt is over.

Fake currency making rounds throughout Victoria - businesses should be on the lookout for signs of counterfeit

Hmm, if only people were familiar with Sir John's appearance they might have noticed him out-of-place on the $100 bill...

Berry said his gambling problem began in 1997 when he was working as a bellman at Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver. He began playing baccarat, with big wins and losses.
In January 2017, Berry told the court, he took $10,000 to the River Rock casino but lost the money. That night, he borrowed $10,000 from Paul, a 50-year-old man he had known for years.
He said he promised to pay Paul $2,000 a week in interest. Berry said he didn’t know Paul’s last name.
Berry said he lost the $10,000 he borrowed from Paul and began trying to figure out how he would pay back the loan shark.
He told Paul he would resign and use his pension fund from B.C. Ferries, but it would take some time.
“When I got home a couple of days later, a rock came through my window and I got a call from Paul asking if I’d got his present,” Berry testified.
Paul was calling him every week. Berry told him he was trying to work it out. Paul was frustrated, Berry testified.
The debt increased to $25,000 to be paid by the end of June. Berry was asked to store a bag in his apartment. He said he agreed because he “was in a desperate place.”
Throughout 2017, Berry continued trying to repay Paul. He visited his sister twice, asking her for $25,000 from his pension fund to repay the debt, but she would only give him $10,000 the first time and $8,000 on his second visit. Because his sister is a Mountie, Berry felt unable to tell her about his predicament, he testified.
He continued to gamble and continued to lose. Berry was asked to store a second package in his apartment, but this time he had to give the loan sharks a spare set of keys to his apartment.

The jury has already heard how police found a note at the scene addressed to Berry's sister, detailing grievances with relatives and the girls' mother. The note called them “factors.”
“Betrayed, bullied, and miscast I set out to leave with the kids,” the letter read. “But I thought it better for myself and kids to escape.”
The note contained Berry's passwords and banking information.

that's a bit hard to tell if it's a suicide note or not. especially without reading it in full.
