Ok right. Odd that it’s not on Google Maps but it appears on Apple Maps as Opal “Street.”

I’m checking Open Maps now.

Aren't we about due for some friend or associate of Our Place to write one of those "I walk through downtown all the time and I always feel perfectly safe" letters to the TC?

“In the face of false allegations, Mr. Berry followed the appropriate procedures and got his parenting time back. The motive is pure speculation. It is in the most ambiguous evidence. Not once do you hear him being called a bad dad.”

McCullough was critical of the forensic and blood-spatter investigations, noting none of the girls’ blood was found on Berry. If he had stabbed the girls in the manner the Crown said he did, he would have had their blood on him, said McCullough.

The lawyer accused the forensic team of doing a “terrible job,” saying the crime scene was disturbed, and things were moved around. The officers did not look for fingerprints on the baseball bat tangled in Chloe’s hair or the knife used to stab the girls.

McCullough noted that the pathologist did not give an opinion about Chloe and Aubrey’s time of death. Because children have less muscle mass than adults, they go through the process of rigor mortis at a quicker rate.

“The process in this case could be as short as one hour and a half. She said there are no published studies to describe the rate of rigor mortis in children.”

Don Evans was ahead this time: he wrote the latest version of this “all’s good and safe, we just need more money” piece a week or two ago in the TC.

Victoria, BC – Patrol officers took a man into custody at gunpoint last night after the man allegedly assaulted two people with a knife.

Patrol officers were called to the 900-block of Pandora Avenue just after 7 p.m. for a report that a man had assaulted two people with a knife. When Patrol officers arrived they located two victims and several witnesses. One of the assaults was captured by a security camera, which provided officers with a clear suspect identification and clothing description.

A short time later, a Patrol officer searching the area for the suspect located him with two other persons in a park in the 1000-block of Opal Avenue. When the officer moved to stop the suspect, he began to walk away. The officer issued voice commands for the suspect to stop. The suspect refused and turned to face the Patrol officer. Knowing the suspect had been armed and was wanted for assaulting two people with a knife the Patrol officer drew his service weapon and ordered the suspect to the ground. The suspect complied with these commands at this point and was held at gun point until additional officers arrived and took him into custody.

No one required medical treatment for physical injuries in the incident.

The suspect was transported to cells where he was held for morning court. Recommended charges include assault, assault with a weapon and uttering threats. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

I'm hearing one of the people assaulted was a Save On security guard? Hard to keep up with all these recent incidences.

"A 37-year-old man who assaulted a senior citizen in broad daylight in downtown Victoria was sentenced to a year in jail after the judge said such behaviour “attacks the foundation of this peaceful city.”

I wonder if the Mayor would disagree as there are no bad people.

Less time served and good behaviour. He's probably already out on the street.

Panhandling in downtown Victoria is, most times, a relatively peaceful exchange of words and glances and money.

I'm curious, who provided this statement in the TC story? If it was a TC staffer, do they not have access to their own archives? Aggressive panhandling has been an issue since at least the 1980s. Yet another one of those "the more Victoria changes, the more it stays the same" thing.

Obviously most interactions in life will not involve a violent crime, whether on the street, in a bank, in a gas station, in a doctor's office, etc. But when a violent crime does happen to occur in those other locations, do journalists take care to remind us that the regular activity tends to be relatively peaceful?

Victoria, BC – Traffic officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward to assist in an impaired driving investigation after a collision yesterday sent one man to hospital.

Traffic officers discovered the aftermath of a collision at the intersection of Gonzales Avenue and Foul Bay Road at approximately 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon. As officers responded they discovered that two vehicles had been involved in a collision. Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the crash.

One of the drivers was not physically injured in the collision. The male driver of the other vehicle was being attended to by a passerby who was an off-duty physician. He was unconscious and in potentially life-threatening condition.

B.C. Emergency Health Services Paramedics arrived and began to treat the male driver. They noted signs of a potential opioid overdose and administered Narcan. The male driver regained consciousness and his condition improved significantly. He was transported to hospital.

Roads in the area were closed for several hours while our Collision Reconstruction Team gathered evidence.

This file remains under investigation. Charges have not been recommended.

The initial investigation indicates that one of the vehicles involved in the crash may have been travelling at high speed. The vehicles involved in the collision are:
🔹a grey 2008 Hyundai Sonata, and;
🔹a green 1993 Honda Accord.

Traffic officers are asking anyone who was in the Fairfield neighbourhood around 4 p.m. yesterday and may have witnessed a vehicle being driven unusually to call our non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654. To report what you know anonymously, please call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

That line jumped out at me, too, as a bit of glib editorializing that's not appropriate for a news article. Clearly the TC is doing it's bit to reinforce a narrative that anyone who spends much time downtown would find inceasingly hard to believe.

Again, this would be the type of background detail that a real journalist would have included in the story about his latest assault. But again, the story makes it seem like this was just an unfortunate one-off violation of the Code of Peace that guides all of Victoria's street folk.

Accidental bear spray incident leads to drugs, weapons charges

Victoria, BC – A Victoria man is facing recommended drug and weapons charges after reportedly accidently discharging bear spray in the presence of Patrol officers.

Just after 3 a.m. this morning Patrol officers were in the 2900-block of Douglas Street investigating a theft when a man discharged bear spray nearby. Officers, believing the man to be in possession of a weapon – bear spray – approached him and began to search him for the weapon.

During their search the officers discovered several weapons, including 2 cans of bear spray, two knives and an electric stun gun. Officers also discovered break-in tools, including a cutting torch. Officers also discovered drugs packaged for trafficking, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, and GHB. These items were seized alongside several mobile phones and approximately $2000 cash.

Officers are recommending 11 charges, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, four counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of break-in tools and four counts of possession of a weapon in violation of a probation order.

The man was held for morning court. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
