"A 37-year-old man who assaulted a senior citizen in broad daylight in downtown Victoria was sentenced to a year in jail after the judge said such behaviour “attacks the foundation of this peaceful city.”

I wonder if the Mayor would disagree as there are no bad people.

the writer was not editorializing about the panhandling. it was a preamble alluding to the judges actual remarks on the topic. which follows right after. It could have been written a bit better to make that clear though. perhaps starting with “court heard that panhandling” etc. and yes the reporter should have mentioned the severity of the Vancouver cases.

3am bear spray in the 2900 block of Douglas eh? 2915 being a low barrier shelter of course.

Just after 3 a.m. this morning Patrol officers were in the 2900-block of Douglas Street investigating a theft when a man discharged bear spray nearby. Officers, believing the man to be in possession of a weapon – bear spray – approached him and began to search him for the weapon.

During their search the officers discovered several weapons, including 2 cans of bear spray, two knives and an electric stun gun. Officers also discovered break-in tools, including a cutting torch. Officers also discovered drugs packaged for trafficking, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, and GHB. These items were seized alongside several mobile phones and approximately $2000 cash.

that guy has some kind of great cargo pants.

Unlikely. Buddy has a long history of unprovoked attacks on women.

A man charged in a vicious assault on the owner of a Vancouver tattoo parlour has been released again, despite being wanted in connection with a series of other recent crimes in the downtown core, including a similar assault on another merchant. From CBC Vancouver May 2014

So in 2014 he was in Vancouver... i wonder what brought him to Victoria.... just pondering....

Big Saanich Police takedown on Quadra at Union around 6 pm tonight. A man walking down the street was ordered down to the ground and arrested. Neighbors were being interviewed.

There should be something on CHEK later. Looked like one of the cops got a few scratches during the takedown.

Again, this would be the type of background detail that a real journalist would have included in the story about his latest assault. But again, the story makes it seem like this was just an unfortunate one-off violation of the Code of Peace that guides all of Victoria's street folk.

They are all too busy drinking the Cool Aid.

Victoria, BC – Shortly after 7 p.m. last night, VicPD officers responded to reports of a woman screaming for help from a boat anchored near Banfield Park on the Gorge Waterway.

Initial information indicated that a woman was clearly in distress and the boat was sinking. As officers were arriving on scene, two paddle boarders started hitting the side of the boat, trying to render assistance.

As VicPD does not possess a marine unit or police vessels, officers reached out to partner marine response agencies while at the same time commandeering civilian vessels along the waterway to render emergency assistance to the woman, who was now reportedly screaming, “he’s trying to kill me.” Victoria Harbour Ferries also pitched in to assist, taking VicPD members to the location of the vessel in distress, as did several boaters who were in the area as well as local residents who offered their watercraft to assist officers. “The actions of these citizens was commendable and allowed VicPD officers to reach the vessel to render assistance,” said Chief Constable Del Manak. “However, this event also highlighted how important it is to have a clear protocol for a coordinated response to incidents like this in local waters. That is something we will be reviewing in the wake of this incident.”

As VicPD officers converged on the vessel with the help of these citizens, a man came up on deck and he was initially uncooperative and not compliant with police direction. Eventually, the man complied with police direction and officers were able to speak with the woman. She indicated that she was not in distress and did not need help from police. The man was therefore allowed to depart the vessel, which he did via a makeshift stand-up paddleboard made from a hot tub lid. No charges are being recommended from this incident and the vessel was not deemed to be in immediate danger of sinking.

Because of the assistance provided by six citizens in particular, responding officers have nominated them for VicPD Civic Service Awards. These awards will be conferred in a ceremony at VicPD headquarters at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24th. “These six citizens stepped up and greatly assisted the Victoria Police Department when we needed them most,” said Chief Manak. “It will be my pleasure to pass on the gratitude of our officers through our VicPD Civic Services Awards, which they so richly deserve for their actions.”

but never waste an opportunity to detail their lack of resources i guess. even if it's a non-call.

this must be the 30th time this month the subject of a serious police investigation has been allowed to go free on his hot tub lid.  meanwhile the gainfully employed guy on his electric scooter gets a $600 ticket from an unapologetic irsu.

Officers Investigating Stabbing

Victoria, BC – Patrol and VicPD K9 officers are currently in the 300-block of Waterfront Crescent and the Galloping Goose Regional Trail for a report that a man was stabbed.

Officers were called to that area after a call came into B.C. Emergency Health Services for a report that a man had been stabbed. Officers arrived and located the victim who was in potentially life-threatening condition. Officers applied emergency first aid until B.C. Emergency Health Services Paramedics moved in and transported the man to hospital. His current condition is unknown.

Officers are searching the area for the suspect and gathering evidence for the investigation. There will be traffic disruptions in the area and on the Galloping Goose Regional Trail as our officers investigate.

This investigation is in a very early stage. More information will be shared as we are able.

Did someone witness the death? Based on the details released, how can the death be determined as "sudden"?

well if the person is away from their home or a healthcare facility. normally you go to hospital if your death is slow-occurring. you’d be unlikely to spend your final dying moments in a park if the death was a slow build.

but you might go to the park and have a heart attack stroke or aneurysm. or go to the park and suffer from homicide or suicide.

All deaths are sudden. While dying can certainly be a lingering process, death itself is pretty much instantaneous. When we die, one moment we are alive and the next we are not, regardless of the cause.
