Can't help but let the mind wander on this, hopefully their family & friends are given privacy while VIMCU works through this.

murder suicide.  it's unfortunately somewhat common.  or at least statistically much more common that suicide pact.

^Another casualty of COVID lockdown, I wonder? For people in a domestic abuse/violence situation, being cooped up with their abuser has got to be worst case scenario.

(Not saying this is the case in this situation. But obviously something wasn't right between those two poor souls).

Long story and history, and as with any small community many locals are well aware of the details here. IMO it’s not Covid related but we’ll never really know.

The Skeena blasting its horn was just an electrical malfunction, not related.

UPDATED: RCMP, coroner investigate murder-suicide on Salt Spring Island

https://www.vicnews....-spring-island/

a property owned by lifelong island resident John Bruce Quesnel

Salt Spring Metal Recycling will no longer be accepting materials after Dec. 5 as business owner John Quesnel has decided he is done with fighting bylaw enforcement.

The property at 251 Fulford-Ganges Rd. is currently zoned as Industrial 1 (soon to be transferred to General Employment 1), which allows indoor recycling only. Complaints about outdoor noise and possible environmental issues have continued to dog the business since the present location was established in 2015.

Quesnel told the Driftwood that he is simply tired of the situation and intends to sell both properties where he has offered the service: the current space on Fulford-Ganges Road and the previous site, a split-zoned rural and agricultural property at 440 Rainbow Rd.

“Our Islands Trust has given me the ultimatum of shut down or face $1,000-a-day fines,” Quesnel posted on the company’s Facebook page. “I recycle millions of pounds of material annually. The Trust is to ‘preserve and protect’ our island and I do more cleaning up this place than any other. Yet somehow I am the enemy.”

Islands Trust bylaw enforcement officer Warren Dingman could not reveal exactly what enforcement action has taken place, but said a Nov. 1 deadline for compliance on some issues was delivered. He confirmed the outdoor sorting and storage of recycling materials was one of the problems.

Quesnel closed the doors at his original location at the end of July 2014 after many years of contention with neighbours, a failed temporary use permit application and eventual legal action from the Islands Trust. He took possession of the Fulford-Ganges property in January 2015 and re-opened for business shortly after.

Salt Spring Metal Recycling has been given a reprieve from Islands Trust bylaw enforcement action for the next few months while owner John Quesnel works with the Trust to bring the business into zoning compliance.

“We’re looking at options at how to comply. We’re going to work together to try to find a solution that works for everyone,” Quesnel told the Driftwood on Tuesday.

Quesnel announced in October that he would no longer be accepting metal recycling materials at 251 Fulford-Ganges Rd. after Dec. 5, following escalation of bylaw enforcement activity. The industrial property is not zoned for vehicle wrecking or the outdoor storage or processing of recycling material, but has filled a gap in local services.

“People are panicking and I’ve been absolutely swamped,” Quesnel said. “I can’t even get the trucks in to get the bins.”

Gotta love islands trust- forever preserving the character of the islands (as they were in 1969). These people are the height of hypocrisy: a bunch of NIMBYs who get away with bullying everyone in their little kingdoms. I’d love to hear them justify their policies to a First Nations person.

🚔50-Year-Old Victoria Man Arrested In Connection With James Bay Fires Investigation🚔

Victoria, BC – Patrol officers arrested one man in connection to three suspicious James Bay fires which occurred in the early morning hours of May 14th.

At approximately 3 a.m. on Thursday, May 14th, Patrol officers were called to a suspicious construction bin fire near the intersection of Michigan and Powell streets. The Victoria Fire Department was already on scene and extinguished the fire. The construction bin sustained significant fire damage.

At approximately 3:05 a.m., while on scene at the construction bin fire, the officers were alerted to a second suspicious fire which was burning in the 500-block of Government Street. Officers attended the area and observed that the staircase of a heritage building was on fire. The Patrol officers contained the fire with a fire extinguisher. The Victoria Fire Department then attended and extinguished the fire.

At approximately 3:10 a.m., Patrol officers received a third report of an ongoing fire in the 200-block of Menzies Street. Officers attended and observed a dumpster fully engulfed in flames. The fire spread to a nearby wooden fence, which the officer was able to contain with a fire extinguisher. The Victoria Fire Department attended and extinguished the remaining fire.

No one was injured as a result of these fires, however significant property damage occurred.

At approximately 12 p.m. on Friday, May 29th, Patrol officers, working with detectives with VicPD’s Major Crime Unit and officers from Strike Force, located and arrested a man believed to be responsible for these fires.

Oliver Govinda Petersen, a 50-year-old Victoria man, faces recommended charges including three counts of arson. Petersen was transported to VicPD cells, where he was held to await morning court.

^ Of course some random guy wandering around downtown with a baseball bat is no threat to anyone (other than the folks he beats up of course).

Place your bets:

This morning we’re focussed on a business location in Greater Victoria, believed to be buying and selling stolen property. Our warrant’s been approved and we’re briefing on the warrant execution.

VicPD’s Strike Force team continues to focus on property crime. This morning we’ll again go behind the scenes for a tweet-a-long as they conduct another search warrant targeting property offenders. -VicPD

value village!  seriously though, isn't it against bylaws for a victoria business to be engaged in frequent purchases from the public without having a pawn-type license?  and all the regulation that goes with that?

Police recovered stolen property that included alcohol, perfume, electronics, coffee and other items.

Strike force members remained at the scene, documenting the contents of the business and property related to crime, police said. Yellow police tape prevented customers from entering the Mega Mart.

Yeah, no surprise there. I made the mistake of dropping in there to pick up some milk one evening - creepy dump that's never seen a janitor, and with 5 or 6 whacked out "patrons" standing dead still in the aisles .. shopping I guess?

Funny thing is, through this entire COVID thing, this place has never even dimmed the lights outside of their stated hours of 5:00am to midnight, 7 days a week.

Guess you gotta make hay while the makin's good, and the contraband is coming through the doors fast and furious.

Value Village doesn’t buy from the public, do they?
