That 7-11 on the corner is open 24/7, and is a constant magnet for the dregs of the downtown core.
It's a strange location for the riff-raff to congregate, but they're not only all hanging around that block at night ... most of them are hanging around (or trying to get inside the store) all through the day as well.
I won't go in there anymore to pick up a snack during the day.
They crawl all over that store, and I've never seen anybody out on the floor cleaning up after them ... I'm the first to admit I quit going there because I was terrified to touch anything, let alone buy it and carry it back to my office to plunk down on my desk.

That's an amazing story of a bank robbery at Yates and Government (where the Starbucks is now).
I looked up the name of one of the cops that was shot and accidentally found another amazing story not mentioned in the article: seven years later the son of the cop was arrested for an almost identical bank robbery/hostage scheme gone wrong. Harold Hemstad and his teenage buddy were arrested at VYR before they could board their plane to Hawaii. Almost all the money the boys stole was recovered. The name of the judge that sentenced them?

Does using a machete fall into the CoV Together Victoria's "survival crime" mulligan?
Perhaps the city could hire him to limit the number of Christmas decorations people try to put up?.......or perhaps a new Machete Mayor?

Wait aren't we supposed to have compassion by realizing that he likely has a history of trauma and abuse and that he's the real victim on a societal level? Or something? I can't keep up with how the narratives are supposed to go these days.
Seriously though hope they find him.

^ I think everyone can agree that he probably needs help, but the reason that the Housing First narrative is failing is that the help he needs is more than "Housing First". If those at UVIC purposely decide to oversimplify an issue, it doesn't make reality go away. That reality is that a portion of the homeless are a danger to themselves and others. Full stop.
It isn't *just* "bad people that prey on the homeless" move in. It isn't "as soon as someone gets a home, they will stabilize". That is naĂŻve and is emotional ideology not becoming of what is supposed to be a higher level of learning.
