Sonia Theroux:

“Shouldn't health emergencies be tended to by.....the healthcare system and practitioners? When did we decide police were best frontline for mental and bodily health emergencies? Never, but your budgets and power have benefited from this decades long mission creep.”

Manak responds: Seriously? @vicpdcanada officers are coming across people in a public place in the midst of an overdose, unconscious, sometimes not breathing while doing their POLICE duties. We call paramedics, in the meantime we intervene. We are not going to walk away. Every life matters.

Got to admire a person who is so committed to her ideology that no amount of facts will dissuade her. But seriously, the only thing worse them ignorance is arrogant ignorance. See also: Isitt, Ben.

...When did we decide police were best frontline for mental and bodily health emergencies...

When those "health emergencies" started to involve bear spray, knives, crossbows, nail-spiked baseball bats and guns.

I wonder if she has ever asked the medical/social workers who would be left dealing with the violence about their opinion on this....

VicPD says robbery suspect shot with ‘less-lethal’ weapon because of behaviour, reports of firearm

February 21, 2021

Victoria Police officers fired less-lethal rounds at a robbery suspect on Saturday morning, after he allegedly stole cash from a nearby pharmacy.

Police found the man soon after just outside of a car dealership on Douglas Street near Summit Avenue. He was cornered by four officers, all with their firearms raised.

Now, the incident is raising questions online of whether police needed to use such force to apprehend him.

i don't think a single officer goes to work and hurt someone on their shift... police do not want to kill people and they don't want to have to use their fire arm.. it is not how they want to start their shift... in a perfect world the robber would listen to the police, would surrender and allow the officer to cuff them and take them in with ease... but we don't live in a perfect world.. the robber/assailant/person in question makes a choice not to listen, wants to try and get away, to fight the police, placing the officers and the public and risk so police have to step up and use some kind of force... and while it might not look pretty and may look like the officer is hurting the person sometimes it is what is needed to subdue the person safely (i can't help but remember the incident caught on tape at uptown a few years back or the one at hillside mall, where witnesses are screaming to let the guy up but the security has to keep them pinned as they fighting and flailing trying to get away)

OMG.  I don't know who in their right mind would allow a loved one to work for the Police given the woke trying to kill them through ignorance.

I would say that the best thing for UVIC political distortion is for VicPD to call in sick for a week but that wouldn't be good for anyone.  I don't know what to suggest to fix this.

their response is “raising questions”? then as evidence CHEK sources one twitter comment?

Under the VicPD’s release on Twitter, one person wrote, “No wonder they can’t afford all those salaries. How many do they need to help one person?”

^ not sure they are trying to “help” a non-complaint armed robbery suspect. nor should they be.

must be someone from Lisa Helps’ “armed robbers are desperate” camp.

Guilty plea avoids trial for man facing Nanaimo prostitution charge

Feb 19, 2021

NANAIMO — A scheduled preliminary inquiry shifted to a sudden guilty plea by a man admitting to a charge of advertising sexual services.

Seyed Kourosh Miralinaghi, 20, will be sentenced at a later date for the Feb. 24, 2019 incident in Nanaimo as opposed to potentially standing trial in BC Supreme Court.

Miralinaghi made headlines over a year ago near Swift Current, Saskatchewan in late January, 2020 when he and four others were arrested and charged with human trafficking offences involving two young women.

Here is video of Calgary police demo of ARWEN less-lethal round. Could be what gets some interest in our local news about the Victoria incident is that the ARWEN (Anti Riot Weapon ENfield) was intended for riots. And who would think that VicPD would ever use such a weapon for demos in Victoria??

The regional Integrated Mobile Crisis Response Team with social workers and police seems like a good idea and they have had a lot of calls in the last 10 years (table and pie chart image from page 8 of Greater Victoria Police Integrated Units Annual Report 2018-2019) but problem is they are only working 1pm to midnight - and outside of that time window, its probably police by themselves.

Respectfully, you're unlikely to see IMCRT responding to an armed robbery, no matter what hours they work.  That is not their role.

ARWEN has been used in Victoria for decades.  CHEK News is just desparate for clicks.

Miralinaghi made headlines over a year ago near Swift Current, Saskatchewan in late January, 2020 when he and four others were arrested and charged with human trafficking offences involving two young women.

I'm sorry, am I getting my facts wrong or does Ian Holmes consider 15-year old girls young women?

"A Nanaimo man will spend close to two more years in a Saskatchewan jail after pleading guilty to procuring a 15-year-old girl for sexual purposes.

Four Vancouver Islanders — Seyed Kamran Miralinaghi, his twin brother Seyed Kourosh Miralinaghi, his mother Shermineh Sheri Ziaee and Shawn Alexander Kelly — were arrested by Swift Current RCMP on Jan. 27 and charged with trafficking two young girls."
