"...smashed their truck window with a sledgehammer... then fled into the park on bicycle before Patrol officers arrived..." That is *so* Victoria 2021.

No....that is "so" "Together Victoria" 2021

Headlines like this always seem a bit strange to me. Would the incident have been less tragic if the community had been indifferent to the deceased firefighter or if he'd had no family to mourn his passing? Would Goosman's sentence have been different?

If the community had any input in sentencing, it would have been very different.  Jay was very much a beloved member of the community & volunteer fire department.  But no, I'm sure you're right, it wouldn't have made a difference.

Arrest Made After Electronic Monitoring Bracelet Removed

February 23, 2021 - File: #21-4084

One person is in custody after removing an electronic monitoring bracelet.

On February 22, 2021, just before 9:30 pm Saanich Police were notified by BC Corrections that a suspect, who was bound by a court-ordered probation condition to wear a monitoring bracelet, had tampered with their device.

Officers attended a residence on Peto Court where they spoke to the suspect, who then refused to comply with directions, threatened officers with violence and retreated into the home. The suspect then turned violent and threw items at officers standing outside, including knives, scissors, and bear spray canisters. The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Unit assisted, and the suspect surrendered to police at 12:30 a.m. The damaged bracelet was recovered and neither police nor the suspect was physically injured in the incident.

The suspect is facing charges including two counts of failing to comply with a release order and one count of assaulting a police officer.

He told CHEK News that bylaw officers began removing his shelter and all of his belongings and he snapped.

“They taped off the area, they didn’t give us any notification, they didn’t give us any kind of warning, they just came in here and seized all of our property,” said fellow camper Shea Smith who was in the process of moving to supportive housing when he says some of his belongings were taken.

“[The campers] don’t have the ability to sit down at a computer and write out their frustrations like everyone else does so this is their only way of communicating...

What a pathetic excuse for vandalism.

...You’re literally awaiting a displacement of terrible proportion, obviously you’re losing everything you’re going to lose everything and you can feel that coming down on a deadline, March 31st is the deadline...

WTF? The "deadline" is when everyone is to be given a home. It's not a $#@* execution date. These folks need a better spokesperson. Someone with even half a brain would be an improvement.

There are reports on Facebook that there are 6 police cars and an ambulance outside an apartment building on Fern St between Begbie and Fort.

A couple of hours ago several VicPD cars went flying past my place towards that general area.

EDIT - poster stated that they were instructed not to use the lobby of their apartment and instead enter through another door, goes on to say that they've only lived there a couple of years and have already witnessed a stabbing and two break and enters.

That seems like a relatively safe area and I'm not too far away.

5 houses in Greater Victoria with harrowing histories

...Statistics Canada reports that Victoria has one of the lowest rates of homicide in a major city per capita, but the brutality of the homicides that have happened in the city should not be understated.

We always hear about what exactly takes place inside of the homes, but this still begs the question: what happens to the houses afterward?

Shea Smith...isn't he the guy who impersonated a Jamaican woman on Twitter? Essentially to troll Adam Sterling? Credibility zero.

Typical anti-camper propaganda to blame the window smashing on a camper. Just because a camper has said he did it. Ben should complain about CHEK to the CRTC. This is exactly why we need a state-run Isitt radio station.

Friends ‘in shock’ after brother charged with first-degree murder of Chemainus teen

February 28, 2021

The older brother of a recent Chemainus Secondary School graduate killed in a small Northern Ontario town has been charged with his murder.

On Jan. 30, Ontario Provincial Police received a disturbance complaint at a Flicker Street home in Manitouwadge, Ont., about 330 kilometres east of Thunder Bay.

Arriving officers found 18-year-old Wayne Allen suffering with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officers arrested Jesse Allen, 38, at the scene. The accused was charged with first-degree murder the next day and made a second court appearance on Feb. 16. Jesse is being held at the Thunder Bay Jail and will appear in court again next month.

Originally from Ontario, Wayne moved to Chemainus with his father during his Grade 10 year, later graduating from Chemainus Secondary in 2020. Despite his short time at the school, Wayne developed many friendships like the one with his basketball and volleyball teammate Matthew Simpson.

“In shock more than anything, didn’t really want it to be real, didn’t really want to believe it,” Simpson told CHEK News on Saturday.

He described Wayne as someone who everybody liked, and said his positive attitude always stood out.

“I don’t remember him ever having a bad day at school, I always just remember him smiling and making jokes all the time,” Simpson said.

The 18-year-old was known as a big time golf lover, and worked at Mount Brenton Golf Course before abruptly quitting last fall.

“In November he told me that he’s going to move back to Ontario briefly, so he said ‘sorry I have to quit,’ so I said ‘no problem, hopefully you come back,’” said Jan Best, the club pro, adding that Wayne told him he didn’t want to go back.

Like Simpson, Best describes Wayne as incredibly likeable.

“I’ve been in touch with a lot of his friends and we’re all going to miss him greatly. Just one of those guys that everybody likes.”

The family has requested their privacy, but a GoFundMe has been set up to help them as they navigate the tragedy.
