It will be interesting in 2022 if the tourists don't come back post-COVID.

do you think it says "whites are the best!"?

Theft of treasured bonsai trees a shock for grandfather

Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing trees in small containers and using meticulous pruning methods to keep them miniature. The hobby has grown in popularity across the world since the Second World War — a Vancouver Island Bonsai Society based in Victoria at the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific holds competitions and workshops.

i don't want to victim blame but bonsai trees aren't that hard to grow and take care of.  now it might be hard to make a douglas fir into a bonsai tree.   but some species are quite easy.    just use some of the same techniques and equipment you use on your veal farm.

What logic!  If something is easy to grow, it should open game to be stolen?  Or maybe considered public property?  Are you looking to run for mayor or council?

We have a bonsai that lives outdoors and pretty much does its own thing, no pruning. But it has enormous sentimental value. Like any hobby there are people that take it to the ultimate and do the meticulous pruning in the old Japanese fashion.

Secret family and wife battle in court over assets of man who led double life

When Michael Widner died, he left two women claiming to be his spouse, each with two children. The judge says each has a right to half his assets, despite polygamy laws

https://nationalpost...f7-8d9b30650746

Sabrina Widner married Michael at a destination wedding in Mexico in 2008, attended by high-profile Hells Angel Bob Green, himself murdered years later. Their kids were born in 2005 and 2006.

Sara Boughton hooked up with Michael in 2009. He promised her he was going to leave his wife though he never did. They also had two children, in 2014 and 2015.

While Boughton knew of Widner, Widner only learned of her husband’s “secret household” after his death, Duncan said.

During her marriage, Widner was listed as the sole owner of three Sooke properties that she said her husband had no interest in.

But Boughton sued Widner, saying Michael “told her many times over the course of their relationship that he paid for several properties which were registered in his wife’s name.”

She asked the court to declare that his estate should include “half of the value of the property held in Ms. Widner’s name” including the proceeds from one house that was sold.

Duncan ruled that both women qualified as the dead biker’s spouses, so both should be entitled to half his estate. And she agreed with Boughton that the estate should include some of the cash that the late Hells Angel had contributed to his wife’s mortgages over the years.

She ordered Widner to pay $150,000, plus interest, into the estate, which will be split between the two families.

Michael was a 39-year-old prospect with the Nanaimo Hells Angels when his body was found near Port Renfrew four years ago. His murder remains unsolved.

“The deceased was able to maintain two separate households because he told Ms. Widner he was working part of the week on the other side of Vancouver Island from the Widner household, when he was actually spending time with Ms. Boughton,” Duncan said. “The deceased kept up a regular schedule, alternating between the two households.”

Michael Widner’s parents testified that they knew about Boughton and the second family but never told his wife or the older children. None of Michael’s siblings knew of Boughton and the younger kids, who were living in a rented house in Shawnigan when he was killed.

His mother, Reta Acorn, testified that her son was involved in cocaine deals with Green, the Hells Angel killed in 2016, and that he paid for the Sooke properties with the proceeds from the drug trade.

“Ms. Acorn said her son was afraid of civil forfeiture, so he put everything in Ms. Widner’s name, although she conceded that she never saw any purchase or financing documents for the properties,” Duncan said, though she later rejected Acorn’s testimony as unreliable.

quite the story.

2017:

A resident of Tugwell Road in Sooke, Widner’s car, a black 2003 Volkswagen Golf, was found abandoned in William Edmonds Park near Poirier Lake on Thursday.

Widner’s ties to the Hells Angels biker gang was confirmed by Hells Angels spokesman Rick Ciarniello, after he told the Vancouver Sun Widner was a prospect and his body had been found Sunday.

This came a day after Widner’s spouse, Sabrina, posted a public message on Facebook, announcing her husband’s death.

“It is with a broken heart and overwhelming sadness I share that the police have informed me that my husband’s body has been found. I am with our children holding them tight and keeping them safe and removed from all the attention. His children know that he is in heaven with his brother Steve and at peace.”

While Widner has no criminal record in B.C., McArthur confirmed he was under watch by the RCMP, though wouldn’t say for what.

I think with bonsai some of it takes decades to achieve. They have some amazing examples at the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific. If you've tended to something for forty years and then it's stolen, it's infuriating.

Cybercrime | VicPD Impersonators Steal $1,700 In Bitcoin CRA Fraud

March 5, 2021 - Files: #21-7570

Victoria, BC – VicPD investigators are warning the public after fraudsters, claiming to be VicPD officers, stole $1,700 from a victim in a sophisticated “Canada Revenue Agency Scam” (CRA Scam) involving bitcoin, number spoofing, impersonation and the use of “voice over IP” calling.

The victim reported to officers that they had received a legitimate notice in the mail from the Canada Revenue Agency regarding their taxes. In an unfortunate coincidence, the victim then received a phone call from a number listed as the VicPD non-emergency line on their call display. Upon answering the call, the victim spoke with a fraudster who impersonated a VicPD officer and claimed the victim was about to be arrested on fraud charges related to their tax account. Having “spoofed” the VicPD number for their “voice over IP” call, the fraudster went as far as to suggest the victim Google the number from which the fraudster was calling to verify that the call was legitimate.

Number “spoofing” is a tactic that cybercriminals use to trick your call display into impersonating a legitimate number and authority. VicPD officers and staff have received CRA scam-style calls with our non-emergency number displayed on our own call displays at our desks. The use of “voice over IP” calling and artificial intelligence automates number spoofing making it easier for professional fraudsters to target their victims.

Convinced the call was legitimate, the victim was then skillfully tricked into revealing personal information, and then manipulated into purchasing $1,700 in bitcoin to pay a non-existent fine. The fraudster convinced the victim through a combination of threats and promises to share the bitcoin QR code with them. It was then the victim realized they had fallen victim to professional fraudsters.

While investigators are continuing their work on this file, it is unlikely the victim’s money will be recovered.
