Brendzy said she organized the petition because Shortreed is up for full release in May.
At the time of her aunt’s murder, no one in the family knew about Shortreed’s violent history, which included assault, rape, and forcible confinement, Brendzy said in an interview with the Gazette in 2018.

Oak Bay rugby coach suspended from Victoria restaurant after sexual assault allegations
Last weekend, 4 allegations against a coach of the Castaway Wanderers FC rugby team emerged on the Survivors Stories Project Instagram account. Of the 4 allegations, 1 was connected to rugby and the others related to the coach’s roles in local nightlife, most recently at The Local in Bastion Square. On Thursday, The Local has suspended the partner and employee while it investigates, Victoria News reported. The rugby team had already asked for and received the coach’s resignation.
Earlier this week, a petition demanded that the bar be held accountable after it turned off Instagram comments (in which people had been asking for a response to the allegations).
In March, separate allegations of sexual violence had emerged about a minority partner at The Local who was also a real estate agents. The Local said it had severed ties with him.

COMOX, B.C. -- Three teenagers were rushed to hospital and a fourth was taken into custody following a multiple-stabbing incident in Comox Saturday evening.
The incident unfolded shortly before 10 p.m. in front of a gathering of between 20 and 50 people in an empty gravel pit area along Prichard Road.
Ryley Stevenson says his friend’s younger brother Grayden was one of the stabbing victims.
“I heard about everything that happened last night,” Ryley Stevenson told CTV News Vancouver Island. “I was in shock. Didn’t expect anything like that to happen in this town, especially (to) kids that we know, such young kids. It’s crazy.”
The three victims as well as the suspect taken into custody are all believed to be around 15 or 16 years old.
