Victoria Police Department

Michelle had her bike & carrier stolen in downtown last week. She missed it dearly as it's her main mode of transportation. She even rides it out to Costco from downtown for grocery runs (amazing!).

On Wednesday night a friend reported seeing the bike being dismantled in the parking lot of a multi-unit temp housing facility -1900-block of Douglas St. They called us right away.

We responded, recovered the bike (in pieces) & arrested a man for possessing stolen property.

Our Community Services Division Bike Squad officers then put their tools to good use, re-assembled the bike & missing parts, & returned it to one happy owner!

This is nice but they would be more helpful if they didn’t just turn a blind eye to bike chop shops and did their law enforcement jobs to begin with.
This person got lucky, and good for her, but each person like here there are likely dozens who never get their bikes back.
Nothing to celebrate here.

Sooke RCMP seize drugs and weapons

2021-05-27 - File: #2021-2186

On the evening of Friday May 21, 2021, an investigation by Sooke RCMP frontline members led to the arrest of two Sooke residents for drug and weapons offences.

Police seized a quantity of suspected Heroin, Fentanyl, Methamphetamine, Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Benzodiazepine ( Benzos ) and other drug trafficking related items. A number of weapons were also located and seized including a hatchet, brass knuckles, knife, defensive baton and a machete.

The Sooke RCMP investigation is ongoing to identify further suspects in connection to this case. Anyone with information on drug trafficking in the District of Sooke is asked to contact Sooke RCMP at 250-642-5241 or to make an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The co-existence of both drugs and weapons is a dangerous combination that is, unfortunately, often seen in the drug trade. The Sooke RCMP remains committed to targeted investigations in support of prosecution for drug trafficking and weapons offences in our ongoing efforts to keep our communities safe.

Cpl. Dawn Gilhen
Watch Commander
Sooke RCMP Detachment

Whatever it is, the cops didn’t even identify it by name like they did every other weapon they seized.

OK, I looked up chain whip and it's a very dangerous ancient Chinese weapon and if you're not fully trained you're more likely to injure yourself than your opponent.

Apple now offers AirTags.

would the be something that people could put on their bikes?

https://www.apple.co...y-airtag/airtag

it still surprises me a bit that so many biked are stolen.  not victim blaming but most go missing when they are taken from areas where they are not well-secured.

Attempted Carjacking Under Investigation

May 28, 2021 - File: #21-20933

Victoria, BC – Patrol officers are seeking witnesses and additional information after an attempted carjacking in downtown Victoria this morning.

Shortly before 11 a.m. this morning, Patrol officers were called to the intersection of Douglas and View streets for a report of a shirtless man running in and out of traffic. Officers then received additional information that the man was attempting to pull a woman out of a vehicle. The woman was stopped at the intersection of Douglas and View streets when the shirtless man entered her vehicle through the driver’s side window and attempted to force her out of the car. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the assault.

Officers attended immediately and learned that bystanders had intervened in the assault, causing the suspect to flee the scene on foot. One of the bystanders who intervened followed the suspect and provided officers with updates on his location and description. Thanks to that information, officers located and arrested the man in 700-block of Pandora Avenue without further incident.

The suspect was transported to the hospital for medical treatment due to drug intoxication. The man will be released into the custody of officers and he will be held in custody for court. In addition to the attempted carjacking, the man was also arrested for assault and breach of probation stemming from a separate recent incident.

This file remains under investigation.

If you witnessed this incident or have information about this incident and have not yet spoken to officers you are asked to call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1. To report what you know anonymously, please call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

I’m a big city girl and in all seriousness, I have never felt as unsafe anywhere as I do now in downtown Victoria. And that goes for daytime too.

I think that TV orchestrated the whole thing to get people out of their cars! On a serious note I am thankful that the lady was not seriously injured. Having said that, many people just don't shake stuff like this off.

I think it would be extremely traumatizing. Like getting harpooned while driving or having pellet gun shots at you when driving or some dude jumping on the hood of your car, slamming and screaming. Those things have all happened for real in our tiny little city. Unreal!

If we had never built Douglas Street, we would not have had this carjacking attempt.
