Woman gets fine, driving prohibition after fatal crash on the Malahat

Times Colonist 14 Dec 2021

David and Justine Tilley. The 46-year-old man was killed and his wife injured in a crash on the Malahat in 2018.

A Victoria woman responsible for a fatal crash on the Malahat three years ago has been fined $1,000 and prohibited from driving for a year.

Sara Thomas, 32, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention in a construction zone on Highway 1 in the early afternoon of June 9, 2018. The collision took the life of David Tilley, 46, and injured his wife, Justine.

Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes accepted a joint submission by Crown and defence, finding that Thomas’s expressions of remorse and regret significantly mitigating.

Thomas was driving north in a 2017 Dodge Caravan. Tilley, a chartered professional accountant who had just been promoted to director at Telus in Vancouver three days earlier, was driving south in a 2007 Honda CRV. He and his wife were celebrating the promotion with a trip to Vancouver Island.

Thomas was driving 100 km/h, significantly above the posted speed limit of 60 km/h, but so were all the other drivers heading north, Holmes noted.

Hold on, we’re told speed “never” causes accidents on the Malahat, and certainly not deaths.

The fact we are all hogtied to that death trap of a highway should be criminal.

Brigitte Cleroux, 49, worked at View Royal Surgical Centre in Victoria for three weeks, CBC has learned.

A woman facing charges for allegedly posing as a nurse at a Vancouver hospital also worked at a private surgery clinic in Victoria, CBC News has learned.

Management at View Royal Surgical Clinic confirmed Monday that Brigitte Cleroux was employed there for three weeks in November 2020.

"We are working with the authorities to review the matter and ensure patients who may have had contact with Ms. [Cleroux] are provided with the information and support they need," Fatima Fazal, the chief operating officer for parent company Surgical Centres Inc., wrote in an email.

Cleroux, 49, is charged with fraud over $5,000 and personation after Vancouver police say she posed as a perioperative nurse at B.C. Women's Hospital from June 2020 to June 2021. She also faces charges in Ottawa based on similar allegations, and has a long history of convictions for posing as a nurse in multiple provinces.

Cops investigating a torched Audi A4 at Cattle Point. Witnesses say a “light coloured Honda” car or SUV left the area through the Cattle Point entrance.

Smells like a car used in a crime by out of town criminals? Torched the vehicle in what they thought is a dark faraway park, fled the wrong way not knowing Cattle Point is a loop.

"The owner said he had left the car in the Goldstream area about 2:30 p.m."

Suspect in Campbell River Walmart stabbing arrested again after breaching court-order, attempting to assault officer

https://www.cheknews...officer-926976/

He was obviously experiencing a mental health crisis and didn’t understand the terms of the court order.  Before they release him again tomorrow the should have a sympathetic social worker explain the conditions.

If he had just been given non-market apartment housing, he would be a productive member of society......probably a doctor.  If he was given a single family home, he would have evolved into a racist.

I have driven the Malahat quite a bit and have never found every driver to be speeding 40km over the limit!

Presumably the RCMP would have felt they had some evidence in order to charge her with impaired driving. I wonder why that was dropped.

I am sure Thomas is remorseful, that doesn't bring back the person she killed however.

100km/h in a 60 zone, on their way to doing 120km/h in an 80 zone. That’s the Malahat.

In many places on the malahat it would actually be dangerous to drive at the speed limit given that nearly all drivers are driving well above that limit.  It is safer to maintain the pace of the other drivers.

There is tailgating on the single lane portions, for sure. But you’re the captain. You can’t let the raging lunatics force you into unsafe situations. They’re going to tailgate no matter what, so I slow down even more when they’re blowing a gasket.

Sorry, I disagree. In my experience, driving within the speed limit, which is what I try to do at all times (especially the Hat), has never proven dangerous of itself. I don’t recall having been so much as honked at for doing so.

An 18-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night after police officers arrived at a Saanich business that had been broken into.

Police received a report about a break-in at a store in the 3600-block of Shelbourne Street around 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 14. The store’s live-feed CCTV alerted its owners about the break-in.

_______

Saanich police suspect the man of breaking into the same business on Monday, noting in a release that evidence was found on him backing up that suspicion.

Police recommended two counts of breaking and entering against the man, who was released with conditions and a 2022 court date.
