k.d. lang isn’t trans.

To the best of my knowledge, no, but they are queer. I haven't heard much from their career recently so perhaps we might see them working at Bows & Arrows coffee.

She lives an intentionally “goalless” life. I think that means she is set, financially.

-Not clear whether Langlois is the "hostage-taker" shot by RCMP or the "one man dead" by the hostage-taker?

For the second day in a row, RCMP officers continued to investigate a homicide at Campbell River’s Discovery Harbour Authority dock, while at the same time the Independent Investigations Office investigated a connected police-involved shooting.

Friends have identified one of those killed as Ryan Langlois.

“He stuck up for me all the time. He gave me a place to live when I needed a place to live. He was my friend. He talked to me. He could talk to me about things that he couldn’t talk to other people about,” said Mandy Bouzane, one of Langlois’ friends.

Shots were fired, and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“He laughed all the time and he was joking. he didn’t deserve to die,” said Bouzane.

Langlois had been living on his boat the Minyachta for a number of years as he was trying to get his business Shoreside Seafood established selling geoducks, sea urchins and seaweed.

He was also a father of a 16-year-old son and in recent months had learned he had a nine-year-old daughter too.

The name of the other man has not been released.

Police seek to identify indecent exposure suspect

2022-06-14 - File #2022-19747

The Nanaimo RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the individual shown in the attached photo. At approximately 10 AM on Friday June 10, 2022, this person allegedly exposed himself to a 17-year-old female as she walked westbound along Fifth St towards Wakeisah Ave. The suspect was initially seen standing in an alleyway, located between Hillcrest Ave and Lambert Ave.

Screenshot 2022-06-15 18.00.12.png

The youth told police that when she walked past his location and made brief eye contact with him, he exposed his genitals to her, and then began walking towards her while committing an indecent act. The youth yelled and told him she was calling the police. The suspect then turned and starting running down the alley way in a southbound direction toward Hardwood Road. The youth managed to snap a picture of him before she lost sight of him.

Police attended and conducted extensive patrols for the suspect but were unable to locate him.

The youth did exactly what is expected when confronted with these situations. She also provided an excellent description which should greatly assist in identifying this person, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The suspect is described as follows:

    * Caucasian, 5 ft. 10 medium build and in his 50’s
    * Grey hair, longer face, sunken

Clothing worn:

    * Wearing a welder’s style hat (skull cap)
    * Greyish/purple partial zip up shirt, brown cargo pants

If anyone can identify this individual, please contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2022-19747.

Hostage describes homicide and police involved shooting in Campbell River

Jun. 15, 2022

CHEK News has learned of new details that paint a clearer picture of what exactly happened at the marina.

A witness to the shooting tells CHEK News that he was drinking on a boat with Langlois, a 74-year-old man named Jacques and another man. He said things turned deadly after Jacques became upset at some comments Langlois had allegedly made. Shortly afterwards, Jacques left and returned with a gun, then shot and killed Langlois, according to the witness, who asked not to be identified.

Then, the witness said, the gunman took him and another man hostage but eventually let them go. Eventually, police fired multiple shots and Jacques was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dustin Gooding, who was Langlois’s business partner but hadn’t seen him in months, says the entire incident is hard to understand.

Dustin Gooding

Gooding said that the 74-year-old man named Jacques, like Langlois, had been living on his boat in the marina for the last several years. He said the two had been known to exchange barbs but also helped each other as well.

Gooding said he will miss the 39-year-old man and is saddened by his death.

“He brought out the best in people in a lot of ways. He had some really good traits when it came to making people feel good about themselves and their skills and moving on to stick up for themselves,” said Gooding.

Officers seize firearms in two separate incidents

Nanaimo

2022-06-16 - File #2022-20252

Screenshot 2022-06-16 14.40.49.png

In two unrelated events, officers seized a sawed off rifle and in the other, a sawed off shotgun. Both firearms were also loaded. These incidents occurred on Tuesday June 14, 2022.

Just after 8 AM, Nanaimo RCMP Bike Patrol officers came upon several persons sitting on the steps that lead to the Nanaimo Military Museum on Cameron Street. One officer saw that one of group had in his possession a fairly unique jeweler’s hammer. This lead to a fulsome discussion on how it was that the individual would have acquired such an item. The conversation didn’t go well as moments later, officers found a loaded sawed off shotgun concealed in his waistband.

The individual was promptly arrested and the firearm was seized. A search of his effects located 16 additional rounds of ammunition. The firearm, shown in the attached photo, was a a modified single-shot 22 calibre rifle.

47-year-old Robert McGeorge of no fixed address was transported to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment and lodged in cells. Later that same day multiple charges were laid against McGeorge for weapons, drugs possession, possess break in tools and breach charges. McGeorge has been remanded until June 21, 2022.

In the next incident that occurred around 3 PM, front officers responded to a report of a man who appeared to be passed out behind the wheel of a motor vehicle parked on Rosamound St. When officers woke the individual they suspected he was impaired by drugs. After detaining him. a check of his clothing located a black bag that held various amounts of suspected crack cocaine, powdered cocaine, MDMA and fentanyl. A backpack located on the floor of the vehicle and within arm’s reach of the individual, was opened and inside it was found a loaded sawed off shotgun. (photo attached)

The 48 year old man and resident of Nanaimo was held in police custody overnight. On Wednesday June 15th, he was released from custody on an Undertaking for weapons charges, with a court date pending for late July 2022. His name cannot be released as charges have not been formally laid.

These two interactions speak volumes to the inherent dangers police officers face on a daily basis. Disturbingly, officers are finding more and more criminals who have taken to arming themselves with these dangerous modified weapons , said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Parksville church hall and offices set on fire, vandalized and robbed

Jun. 16, 2022

A Parksville church hall and its offices are a little worse for wear after they were set on fire and broken into Wednesday morning.

St. Anne & St. Edmund Anglican Church’s community hall and offices sustained significant smoke damage after it was broken into with a blow torch, which started a fire, robbed and vandalized at around 3 a.m. on June 15, according to a press release issued by the Diocese of British Columbia.

“The physical damage to the building can be repaired, but we grieve the loss of this community space in the interim. Many citizens of all ages visit the church hall weekly for meaningful programs—the temporary loss of their access to the building will be felt most deeply by them,” Bishop Anna Greenwood-Lee of the Anglican Diocese of Islands and Inlets.

Former Nanaimo-Ladysmith education assistant pleads guilty to child sex offences

Jun. 16, 2022

A former education assistant with the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District pleaded guilty to three sex offences, including two involving students, on Thursday.

Screenshot 2022-06-16 22.50.46.png

Glen Massick, 46, pled guilty to two counts of touching children under 16 years for a sexual purpose and one count of sexual assault at provincial court in Nanaimo on June 16. Other charges against Massick were dropped.

The sexual touching took place in May and June of last year while the sexual assault happened between October 2018 and October 2019. The victims under the age of 16 were both special needs students he met through his employment.

The assaults happened outside of school hours off school grounds but his employment gave him the opportunity to meet the students and connect with their parents.

One victim’s parents, whose identity is being protected by CHEK News in order not to disclose the victim’s identity, said that Massick offered to teach their child how to fish at Nanaimo’s Colliery Dam Park.

The victim’s parents say they are speaking out because they want other parents to know what Massick is capable of doing.

Massick declined to comment when he left the courthouse and when asked if he felt remorse he said he’d talk about that another time.

The judge ordered pre-sentence, psychiatric and Gladue reports and if ready she’ll set a day for Massick’s sentencing in August.

Officers Investigating After James Bay Arson Destroys Vehicles

Date: Friday, June 17, 2022 - File: #22-22552

Victoria, BC – VicPD officers are investigating two arsons in James Bay last night, one of which destroyed several vehicles parked outside an apartment complex last night.

Patrol officers were called to the 0-block of Menzies Street by Victoria Fire Department firefighters who reported they were extinguishing a blaze engulfing several vehicles just before midnight. Officers arrived and noted significant damage to the vehicles and the carport structure.

Victoria Fire Department firefighters reported to officers that they were already in the area at approximately 11:45 p.m. last night, responding to a small fire outside a building on the same street. This small fire had been deliberately set and had been extinguished by building residents. As the firefighters were preparing to leave the scene of this first fire, they were flagged down by a resident from the second building, approximately 100 meters away, who pointed them to larger fire in the carport area of their building. Firefighters were able to contain and extinguish this second fire before it spread further.

Six vehicles were damaged or destroyed, along with the carport structure. A photograph of the damage is below. No one was physically injured.

Both of these fires are arsons and remain under active investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone with dashcam, doorcam, or other video from the area from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. last night, to save your footage and call (250) 995-7654 extension 1. If you have information about these incidents and have yet to speak with investigators, please call (250) 995-7654 extension 1. To report what you know anonymously, please call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The B.C. Court of Appeal will begin hearing evidence Monday in an Oak Bay father’s bid to overturn his convictions for the murders of his two young daughters on Christmas Day 2017.

In September 2019Andrew Berry was convicted of the second-degree murders of six-year-old Chloe Elizabeth and four-year-old Aubrey Kate, who were stabbed to death at his Beach Drive apartment.

In December 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility of parole for 22 years.

Berry, who maintains his innocence, filed the notice of appeal minutes after his sentence was imposed. He is also appealing the length of his parole ineligibility.

The hearing, which is scheduled for four days, will take place at the Vancouver Law Courts.

The Court of Appeal has also arranged for the hearing to be broadcast live in a Victoria courtroom “given the level of interest from media and members of the public,” says a notice on its website.

A man who attempted to stop a woman he suspected of stealing items from a James Bay grocery store got more than he bargained for late Thursday afternoon.

A second man who Victoria police believe was connected to the woman reportedly assaulted the first man and the two suspects fled the scene with the stolen items. VicPD is now asking for witnesses and is asking for the public’s help identifying and locating the pair.
