...Shortly after 9:30 p.m. last night Patrol officers were called to the pond off Dallas Road at Government Street for a report that a woman had driven a vehicle into the water at that location...

Are they sure this isn't the location of a pop-up car wash?

One phone call was enough to interrupt a possible child luring incident

2022-07-06 - File: #2022-22280

Two City of Nanaimo employees with a keen sense of awareness are being credited with interrupting a potentially dangerous child luring incident, that involved a man in his 50’s and a female youth between the ages of 11-15. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 PM on Wednesday June 29, 2022, at Robins Park in south Nanaimo.

The two witnesses told police they were prepping the baseball diamond for game that night when they first caught site of the man and girl. The witnesses said that the two were siting very close to each other in the bleachers and by their interactions and body gestures, it did not appear that it was a father-daughter relationship. After watching them interact for some time the witnesses decided they needed to report what they observed to the police.

When officers arrived, the young lady told the officer that she was under the impression her male friend was 25 years old She also said that she met him through an online social media platform called V-sing, which allows users to record themselves while singing. It also has a chat option and private message function. The youth said she had been communicating with the man for the past 9 months through V-sing as well as face timing on a daily basis using her personal cell phone. She said the two of them were nothing more than good friends. The adult was spoken to privately. His true age was confirmed to be 53 and that he had arrived in Nanaimo that day after travelling from his home in a mid-western state of the USA. He told officers he was booked into a local hotel for the next two days.

The individual tried unconvincingly to tell the officer that he and the girl were just friends. When asked, he did not deny that his intentions could be seen as being sexual in nature. As there was insufficient evidence at the time to detain him, the man was allowed to leave. He was told to depart Nanaimo immediately and return to his home in the United States. That evening, the Canada Border Security Agency confirmed that he had crossed the Canadian border and had returned to the USA.

This investigation is being aggressively pursued by this detachment as well by the Department of Homeland Security in the United States. Investigators would also like to acknowledge the witnesses who provided such timely evidence. If it was not for their astute observations and phone call, this incident could have ended terribly for this young lady and her family , said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

It seems as though motor vehicles are the cause of 99% of the police activity in Oak Bay; the rest of course, being murders.

Man Arrested After Assaulting Officer, Foot Chase

Date: Tuesday, July 12, 2022 - File: #22-26080

Victoria, BC – A man has been arrested after assaulting an officer and leading officers on a foot chase last night.

Just before 6:30 p.m. last night Patrol officers were called to a multi-unit supportive housing facility in the 700-block of Queens Avenue for a report that several unwanted people were in front of the property. A patrol officer attended and asked the group to leave the property. As the officer spoke with the group, a man with that group began to act suspiciously. The man then gave the investigating Patrol officer a false name. When the officer told the man he was under arrest, the man assaulted the officer by punching him in the chest and fled on foot. The officer called for back-up officers and gave chase on foot.

Additional Patrol officers responded and observed the fleeing man running through the Quadra Heights playground near the intersection of Rutledge and Villance streets. Patrol officers continued to give chase on foot as the man leapt the fences of several residences in the 3100-block of Alder Street. When officers briefly lost sight of the suspect, an area resident left their home to call out to officers “he went that way” and pointed officers towards the backyard of a nearby residence.

A Patrol officer located the suspect in the backyard of a residence in the 3100-block of Alder Street, in the process of climbing the fence. The officer pulled the suspect from the fence and brought him to the ground. The suspect continued to attempt to fight the officer until he was taken into custody. As the officer was taking the man into custody, a pair of brass knuckles fell out of the suspect’s pocket.

The suspect then indicated that he was in medical distress. Officers provided comfort and aid while a BC Emergency Health Services ambulance and paramedics were dispatched. He was transported to hospital, treated and released back into police custody. Two officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident. Both were treated on scene by a VicPD Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) police officer and completed their shifts.

Officers searched the suspect’s backpacks and located a knife and bear spray, as well as identification documents and a credit card belonging to someone other than the suspect and believed to be stolen. As officers continued their investigation they learned that the man was in breach of numerous conditions ordered in as part of the sentence of a previous offence. The suspect was transported to VicPD cells.

The man faces recommended charges including assaulting a police officer, obstruction and illegal possession of identity documents as well as three weapons possession charges and six charges for violating a variety of court-ordered conditions. He was held for court.

The investigation remains ongoing. If you have information about this incident and have not yet spoken with an officer, please call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.

Moving this conversation to "Crime" now that the Integrated Major Crime Unit is involved:

- So I wonder what Justin Hall has to say for himself?

The search for Amber continues – VIIMCU engaged

2022-07-12 - File #2022-6674

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) has now been called to assist the Port Alberni RCMP in Amber Manthorne’s disappearance.

We understand that it may be concerning to hear that the VIIMCU has been called to assist, however we want to assure the community that this is not unusual, in cases where a person’s disappearance is out of character and criminality can not be immediately ruled out, states Inspector Kevin O’Donnell, Officer in Charge of VIIMCU. If criminality is ruled out the Port Alberni RCMP will again become the primary investigating agency.

VIIMCU Investigators are in Port Alberni following up on tips/information, conducting interviews and gathering surveillance and other video, and completing other investigative tasks in an effort to advance the investigation.

Earlier this week, Port Alberni RCMP issued a news release stating that Amber may be in the company of a man, that man has since been located and police no longer believe that Amber is with him.

RCMP will continue to work with Search and Rescue teams to search viable sites as they are identified, such as the one south of Nanaimo where her vehicle was discovered.

Investigators have determined Amber was last seen on Thursday July 7, and continue to appeal for any information related to her disappearance.

If you have information and have not already spoken with police, you are asked to contact the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.

Would appear to be at the McDonalds.

Up in the north part of town, the immediate area around that particular McDonalds and over to (and including) the Shell station on the corner of Douglas and Saanich Road is an oddly located haven for miscreants of all types, with very obvious, open drug dealing occurring in the McDonalds parking lot, and a lot of panhandling over towards the Shell station (including direct panhandling while you're filling up with gas).

It's a strange corner at the best of times, and a place to be cautious in after dark.

Do we have any idea why?

A McFlurry or a large order of fries is probably still a greater danger to one's health though.

Indeed ... I've often wondered why, if I can see the wide open drug dealing in the McDonalds parking lot while I'm eating my burger, the SaanichPD aren't more actively patrolling that area trying to clamp down on some of that activity.

I've never seen a SaanichPD cruiser in the McDonalds parking lot (perhaps it's all undercover).

I'd bet my lunch money that the guy with the knife, and whoever he's waving it at ... are both a part of some kind of drug deal gone sour.
