Imagine if Victoria even sent a portion of its shoplifting video to the media. There would be 20 new clips per day.

Langford resident says pendant with friend’s ashes were stolen when her car was broken into

A Langford woman says her car was broken in to early Monday morning, and one of the stolen items is a pendant with her friend’s ashes.

“My best friend since I was 13, and my maid of honour whose ashes it was in my car,” the woman, who asked for her name not to be shared, told CHEK News. “He broke into my car to get the garage fob…And that is where my dragonfly pendant was hanging from my rearview mirror, the pendant itself isn’t valuable…but I just always liked having it there.”

Colwood woman sentenced to 5.5 years for sexually assaulting 15-year-old boy

Consecutive sentences for two counts of sexual assault, one count of internet luring

Sep. 14, 2022

More details reported in today's T-C:

Defence lawyer Rolfe Horne said Monday he has instructions to appeal the sentence.

The trial, which took place over five days in late June, heard that in April 2020, Ms. P lived in a townhouse in a Colwood development.

One evening, a group of four boys gathered on the sidewalk outside her home. She and a friend were on their way to the liquor store. The teens offered to trade marijuana for a six-pack of vodka coolers. The women agreed and came back with the six-pack and their own two litres of wine. By this time, the 15-year-old boy had joined the group.

The two women drank wine. The boys smoked dope and drank the coolers. Everyone was intoxicated to some degree. Then the woman began an erotic solo dance, removing some of her clothing. She sat on the 15-year-old’s lap. They began to kiss, then went upstairs and had sex. The woman testified that she asked “Are you sure you’re 18?” three times. The boy replied “Yes” and “I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t.”

A few days later, she sent a text inviting the 15-year-old to a “hot make-out sesh.” He came over and they had sex on a couch in her garage.

During the sentencing hearing, court heard that Ms. P is the mother of a six-year-old boy who suffers from attention deficit disorder. Their family doctor believes her son’s mental health and development will suffer if she is incarcerated.

Ms. P was sexually abused as a child and has received treatment for anxiety and depression since the age 14. She has no criminal history and her risk of re-offending is low, court heard. She is employed, is in a stable relationship with an intimate partner, and has the support of her mother.

However, a probation officer found Ms. P minimized her behaviour by saying that there aren’t any laws to hold “a minor to account for lying about their age.” The judge found her expression of remorse at the sentencing hearing “unconvincing” because she continued to blame the youth for misleading her about his age...to impose a lesser sentence on a female offender than a male offender infringes the rights of male offenders under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, wrote Gouge.

Although the judge said he is concerned about the impact on Ms. P’s son, he did not think he should reduce an “otherwise-appropriate sentence” for that reason.

“Many offenders have children. If I were to impose a lesser sentence on Ms. P because of the impact of the sentence on her mother and son, I would dilute the deterrent effect of the sentence,” he wrote.

The son will continue to have a close relationship with his father and grandmother.

Is the shop 6 inches from the road?   Or do you ring that bell and someone comes out?

Someone really wanted to get shot? As mentioned on the radio this morning, a couple days ago a fella in LA was killed for doing the same thing. Granted, I think our local police are less trigger happy, however 'gun near a school' is going to mess everyone's reactions up.

Anyone stupid enough to carry around a fake gun, especially near a school, probably doesn’t have the wits to consider the possible consequences.

Is it odd that the the guilty party has her name protected from publication?

I think sometimes we see that with father / daughter incest cases. Not usual at all with this type of case.

Ex-Nanaimo-Ladysmith school staffer sentenced to six years for sexual abuse

Glen Murray Massick pleaded guilty to charges in June

Sep. 27, 2022

A former Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools education assistant will serve jail time for sexually abusing students.

In June, Glen Murray Massick, 46, who previously worked at an SD68 high school, pleaded guilty in provincial court in Nanaimo to two counts of touching children under 16 years for a sexual purpose and one count of sexual assault. Three victims were involved, all boys, and whose identities are protected under a publication ban.

He was sentenced to two years for each charge and will be imprisoned six years in a federal institution.

The sexual touching incidents occurred between May and June of 2021 and the offences took place in Nanaimo involving two high school students who have disabilities. Massick took the two victims on extra-curricular outings where he would show them **rnography on his cellphone and would perform sexual acts on himself and the victims.

The guilty man’s attitude in court bothered them (victim's family) - “I didn’t see any remorse,” said one parent. “When you look at people and smile, that means that you [couldn’t] care less,” said another.

Sentencing hearing delayed for driver who caused fatal Central Saanich crash

A two-day sentencing hearing set to begin Wednesday has been delayed until November for the man convicted of dangerous and impaired driving that left one woman dead and her sister seriously injured.

Earlier this year, Anthony Thomas was found guilty of impaired driving causing death and bodily harm and dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm.

He was driving south down Central Saanich Road on Aug. 17, 2018, when he veered across the roadway and into the opposite boulevard, striking sisters Tracey, 48, and Kim Ward, 51, who were out walking their dogs. Kim was pronounced dead at the scene, while Tracey survived with injuries requiring 24-hour care for the rest of her life.

During his trial, a toxicologist testified that samples of Thomas’ blood contained 297 nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml) of methamphetamine, 39 ng/ml of amphetamine and 14 ng/ml of alprazolam – commonly known as Xanax – at the time of the collision. She described the level of methamphetamine as significant and said if an individual was in the “crash phase” of ingesting it, they would experience extreme drowsiness.

MAN ARRESTED WITH WEAPONS DURING ROAD RAGE INCIDENT

September 29, 2022 - File #22-18716

On September 28, 2022, at 9:20 PM, it was reported that two males were arguing in a commercial parking lot in the 3700 Block of Shelbourne Street.  The caller stated that one male was brandishing a knife and bear spray and that the situation needed police to intervene. The weapons were not used against anyone during the incident and no physical injuries were reported.

Officers attended and arrested a 50-year-old Saanich man for Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose pursuant to Section 88 (1) of the Criminal Code. Police later learned that the confrontation started in the 4400 block of Shelbourne Street when the two males were driving in separate vehicles. During that time, there appeared to be allegations of erratic driving behaviour by both men with the event ending in both males turning into the same parking lot.

The male who brandished the weapons was later released on conditions to have no contact with the victim, and not to possess prohibited or restricted weapons, including knives or bear spray.  He will also appear in court in November 2022.

“We urge all drivers and residents not to confront others if they have driving concerns,” said D/Sgt. Damian Kowalewich. “We have a dedicated Traffic Safety Unit who are prepared to investigate traffic matters and who are ready to assist when needed.”

MAN ARRESTED AFTER MULTIPLE INCIDENTS ON ROADS IN SAANICH AND VICTORIA

October 2, 2022

File #22-18975

On October 2, 2022, at 12: 40 PM, it was reported to ECOMM that a male driving a Chevrolet Aveo erratically in the 2500 Block of Blanshard Street in the City of Victoria.  Shortly after, an additional caller stated that the erratic driver had exited his vehicle and brandished a knife toward another driver in the 2600 block of Blanshard Street.  A short while later, another caller advised they had been confronted by a male with a knife in the 3200 block of Blanshard Street in the roadway.  The erratic driving continued with the driver of the Cheverolet Aveo failing to stop at red lights, passing unsafely, and speeding.

Ultimately, another witness called in to advise the male driver was in the parking of the Save on Foods grocery store in the Saanich Plaza. With the assistance of the Victoria Police, Saanich Police attended and were able to de-escalate the male who was also in crisis and had what was believed to be a self-inflicted wound to his body.  The male, a 36-year-old Greater Victoria resident, was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and provided medical and mental health-related care.

After the male was assessed by medical professionals, he was arrested for Assault with a weapon x 2, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, and Uttering Threats. Police also learned that the male was on parole and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.  Police communicated with his parole officer to ensure they were aware of the male’s actions.

The male was held in custody to face the criminal charges as police continue to investigate and gather evidence to support the case.  Saanich Police offered all victims and witnesses with supportive resources relative to the incident.

“This multijurisdictional incident could not have been remedied so quickly had it not been for the excellent awareness and communication of the witnesses involved.  It was fortunate that no other drivers, pedestrians, or cyclists were injured given the overall erratic driving and behaviour of the driver,” stated D/Sgt. Damian Kowalewich.
