The daughters of Morgan Harris — one of four women police allege were killed by a Winnipeg man — say police told them their mother's remains are believed to be at a landfill north of the city, not the Brady Road landfill.

Kera and Cambria Harris say they were told by police on Monday that their mother's remains are believed to be at Prairie Green Landfill in Stony Mountain, Man., and officers gave a PowerPoint presentation to them, explaining why they won't search there.

Is someone going to give in here and commit millions of dollars to a landfill search?

The chair of Winnipeg's police board says officials are trying to find a way to conduct what he calls a meaningful search for the bodies of two First Nations women believed to be in a landfill north of the city.

The police board met on Thursday evening with police Chief Danny Smyth and senior police inspectors to discuss the calls to search the Prairie Green landfill in the rural municipality of Rosser.

Victoria, BC – Officers conducted a three-day retail theft project which resulted in 17 arrests, weapons seizures and the recovery of approximately $5,000 in stolen merchandise.

From November 29th, 2022 to December 1st, 2022 officers from VicPD’s Community Services Division (CSD) conducted a three-day retail theft project targeting prolific property crime offenders. The suspect was caught and displayed signs of alcohol impairment. The suspect was arrested for impaired driving and possession of stolen property over $5000 as officers learned the F-150 was stolen out of Saanich on December 5th.

GARTRY has form on the Lower Mainland from 1997 to 2022 for B&E, PSP, Aggravated Assault, Firearm, Breach etc., with charges still before the courts. I guess he must have spent some time on the Island too...

Two defendants appear on indictment connected to $7 million in drugs left on beach near Port Angeles, Washington in April 2021

400 pounds of methamphetamine and two pounds of fentanyl left in black duffle bags on the shoreline

Screenshot 2022-12-09 19.23.29.png

Seattle – Two of three defendants charged in a failed attempt to smuggle more than 400 pounds of methamphetamine and two pounds of fentanyl powder into Canada appeared in U.S. District Court in Seattle today, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.  Erika A. Bocelle, 32 , of Providence, Rhode Island and John Michael Sherwood,  65, currently of Idaho,  appeared on an indictment today, connected to the April 2021 discovery of some $7 million of illegal drugs found on the beach near Port Angeles, Washington.

Bocelle, Sherwood and a third defendant, Kevin Christopher Gartry, 45, of British Columbia, Canada, are charged in a three-count indictment with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute, and conspiracy to commit international money laundering.  All three defendants are in custody on unrelated charges and are being brought to western Washington on the indictment returned in August 2022.

On April 7, 2021, beachcombers near Port Angeles reported a black duffel bag with drugs inside.  The Clallam County Sheriff’s office took possession of the bag found to contain 2 pounds of fentanyl powder and nearly 60 pounds of methamphetamine. The fentanyl powder was originally believed to be cocaine. Just days later, on April 11, 2021, a different beach walker reported another find – seven more duffel bags containing 342 pounds of methamphetamine.  The Sheriff’s Office estimated the street value of the drugs as nearly $7 million.

Due to the large quantity of drugs involved, the defendants face a mandatory minimum ten years to life in prison.

The charges contained in the indictment are only allegations.  A person is presumed innocent unless and until he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The grand jury indictment was returned after an extensive investigation by the FBI, Homeland Security Investigation (HSI), U.S. Border Patrol and the Border Patrol Air and Marine Unit, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team (OPNET).

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Vince Lombardi.

Police investigating shooting

More from CHEK:

Douglas Anderson, who lives next door, says he was heading to bed when he “heard a big ruckus” coming from his neighbours’ house.

Screenshot 2022-12-09 20.04.08.png

“I thought they were fighting, like normal, and I guess not. He was shot in the leg,” Anderson told CHEK News.

“I went in and I actually saw him calling for help from his girlfriend. I happened to look in through the broken window and saw that he was bleeding out of his leg.”

He says he knows the victim quite well, adding, “He’s a friend. A neighbour.”

Police found the shotgun at the scene that had been discharged.

Neighbours say they hope it’s listed as a nuisance property by the city as they want peace in the neighbourhood.

Screenshot 2022-12-09 20.06.49.png

“I’m kind of fed up with it. We’ve had the police there so many times and they know they’re a problem so I’m kind of frustrated that it’s come to this. We’ve only lived here five or six months and it’s just been a nightmare,” said Anna, a neighbour who declined to give her last name.

Police calls on the rise at Topaz Park where recent sexual assault of teen occurred

Victoria police continue to investigate a disturbing sexual assault that reportedly occurred on Tuesday morning in Topaz Park.

Nancy Raycroft and her dog, Murphy, are regulars at the park.

"I’ve been here everyday for over 20 years," said Raycroft, who lives a few blocks away.

She has begun to feel unsafe coming to the dog park as more campers have been moving into the park.

"Especially after the assault that just happened," said Raycroft on Friday.

Topaz Park in Victoria is pictured on Dec. 9, 2022.

It’s a crime that the Victoria Police Department is gravely concerned about.

The assault went on for several minutes before the teenager was able to break free of the men. She ran to a safe place and told an adult about what had just happened.

The Victoria Police Department wouldn’t confirm if the teenaged girl attends the nearby school Ecole Secondaire Victoria High School. Many students do have to make their way through Topaz Park to attend classes in the morning.

On Friday, the principal of that school sent out a letter to students and parents, warning of the assault that had taken place in the park.

The two men are described as being approximately 60 years of age with dark hair. Both were wearing dark-coloured clothing, large backpacks, and had dishevelled appearances.

Those two men are still at large.

"I did see those two guys come in," said Raycroft.

Raycroft was in the park on Tuesday morning before the assault happened. She saw the men enter the park as she was leaving.

"They caught my eye because they were dressed all in black with black knapsacks," she said.

GROWING CONCERNS

Over the past few months, police say calls to the park have increased.

"There’s been assaults, there’s been fights, there’s been some overdose calls, as well as calls involving crime and that type of thing," he said.

The Church Of Jesus Christ Of The Latter-day Saints backs onto Topaz Park. It is getting high-pitched mosquito speakers installed to deter people from sleeping in doorways and a fence is also being installed around the entire perimeter of the property.

The chair of Winnipeg's police board says officials are trying to find a way to conduct what he calls a meaningful search for the bodies of two First Nations women believed to be in a landfill north of the city.

The police board met on Thursday evening with police Chief Danny Smyth and senior police inspectors to discuss the calls to search the Prairie Green landfill in the rural municipality of Rosser.

https://www.cbc.ca/n...earch-1.6680036

Smyth said last week that he believes the remains of two women allegedly killed by Jeremy Skibicki are in the privately operated landfill north of the city, but that a search wouldn't be feasible at this point.

That ignited calls from First Nations advocacy groups and family members for Smyth to resign.

Police chief says he won't step down

Smyth said in a statement on Friday that he won't resign.

I feel for the family and the police in this one...

Who would want their loved relative to be buried (dumped) in a landfill? horrific  Yet, at the same time, it's been several months, and thousands of tons of refuse since - needles and haystacks come to mind..

Politically, I'll bet that they spend the money and time to look...

Hope that the Chief of Police doesn't lose his job over this - he made a defensible decision that might be over-ruled, but thats no reason for job loss..

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Experts:

3 of every 4 Sask. homicide victims in 2021 were Indigenous

“Without evidence” the experts presented this finding:

Experts told CBC News that differences in service delivery, such as policing, in rural and urban areas may have played a part in the numbers. But the disproportionate amount of Indigenous people killed is not a new issue, they said, and the deaths are tied to the lasting impacts of colonialism and poverty.

"Based on the treatment of Indigenous people over hundreds of years, we should [not] be surprised that this is happening," said Hilary Peterson, a lawyer who lectures on criminal law and youth crime at the University of Saskatchewan. She is a citizen of the Métis Nation—Saskatchewan.

"This is a consequence of mistreatment."

The link between colonialism, systemic racism and poverty has been made in multiple inquiries and commissions examining the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system and other issues, such as missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

Believe it or not, indigenous people do not kill each other because of colonialism.

The article fails to mention who is killing the victims. It’s not the settlers.
