Just for fun, I was thinking of running a simple poll, on what municipality is best.  What categories could a guy use?

Crime - pretty straightforward, most people think limited crime is the best

Affordability - housing, goods, just overall

Traffic/transportation - simple here

Recreation - parks, rec centres, open space, cycle routes etc.

Economy/jobs - how's the jobs there?

And I thought maybe something about "raising a family" or something...  Maybe "nightlife"?

Any other ideas?

Nightlife/entertainment, natural setting, sense of history/future outlook. I think these play into a community's appeal or lack thereof.

Tax levels.

I think that could just go into affordability.

I supposed I could add in general municipal service levels, sort of a "dealing with city hall".  Everything from their website to their service counter to garbage pickup.

I agree. How your concerns are dealt with by City Hall is an important park of ranking the livability of a particular municipality.

Culture. It's going to be pretty easy to rank CoV lower overall if you are willing to ignore that the city is where the opera, ballet, symphony, art gallery and the overwhelming majority of the concerts are.

And how many people avail themselves of the opera, ballet, symphony, art gallery and concerts? Not a big percentage I would guess.

You can't even get people to chip in $5 for the Symphony Splash.

Walkability.

Shopping (proximity to and choice re: grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores...)

Entertainment (restaurants, cafés, bars/pubs, galleries, performance venues, sports facilities...)

Nature (blvd tree canopy, parks, lakes, rivers, oceanside, views)

Public space (squares/plazas, sidewalks, benches, public docks, walkways, trails, playgrounds, dog parks)

Noise (e.g. highway, airport, harbour, traffic, outdoor performances, construction, tourist impacts)

Community resources (libraries, rec centres, hospitals/medical, specialists)

Centrality (whether close to the main population centre or well-connected to it)

Schools

Community engagement (voter turnout, volunteering, neighbourhood activities)

AAA = all ages & abilities (whether well-suited for young child, elderly, disabled...)

Microclimate. Sometimes there's a 10 degree difference between James Bay and Saanich.

Or sunny in oak bay but raining in Sidney.

Plenty of micro-climates within municipalities too, so I don't think that's a good factor at all to consider. Royal Oak is always 2-3 degrees different from Gordon Head, as an example.

I want to keep it to under 10 questions.

1.  Traffic / noise

2.  Shopping variety

3.  Services - private

4.  Crime / street issues

5.  Culture / entertainment / restaurants

6.  Parks, indoor and outdoor recreation and green spaces, trails and walkability

7.  Schools

8.  City Hall / city services

9.  Affordability

Maybe it's not ranking, but rating.  Of course, I can turn those ratings into rankings.

I don't know, maybe I'm a bit biased because I grew up there, and still have a soft sport for it, but Saanich ranks pretty good in all those categories, except maybe culture.

How are people supposed to respond to those? Example: Victoria could get dinged for being unaffordable whereas Oak Bay could get high marks for being unaffordable. Victoria could get dinged for having street noise whereas Metchosin could get high marks for not having street noise whereas Central Saanich could get dinged for not having street noise. Some people would rate lack of schools or a family-friendly environment as a plus, others would rate it as a negative. Some people would say Wal-mart = shopping variety, others would say Oak Bay Avenue = shopping variety.

I don't know.  The idea is going to be to rate your own municipality.  At the start of the poll, you enter that.

Then you go on to answer 9 questions about your municipality.

Maybe at the end there will be a fun question... no matter where you live now, and you can certainly vote for the municipality where you currently reside... but if you had the choice and the means to live in any of these 13 (actually 15, I'm adding JDF and GIsland as choices), which one would you move to?

That might just be the most offensive smear that I've ever read on the internet. But seriously, this is what I'm always ranting and raving about re: defining terms. Everyone wants the right place and nice things and nice people and the right kind of people and the right kind of atmosphere, etc. But their definitions of the above are going to be completely different.
