Canada's amazing Allison Crowe (vocals, piano, guitar, fiddle & bodhran), Vancouver Island-born, Newfoundland-nested singer-songwriter, pairs with exquisite cellist/vocalist Celine Sawchuk, born in Germany's Black Forest and now home on Salt Spring Island, BC to bring “Tidings  music for the season & all-time.

Tidings delivers comforts and joys stirring together traditional Christmas and holiday favourites from English, French and German repertoire, with an organic blend of rock, jazz, folk, roots and soul.

Nanaimo’s Allison Crowe performs concerts across Europe and North America from her home on Canada’s Atlantic coast. In Corner Brook, NL, Allison’s writing a book of prose poetry, “Fluttering”, and composing songs for a new album, “Rare Birds” (her 22nd release on Rubenesque Records). She’s Musical Director of “Newfoundland Vinyl”, a rollicking hit at TNL’s Gros Morne Theatre Festival. Other adventures include Allison’s cameo in the Hollywood Superman blockbuster “Man of Steel” and touring as featured singer/pianist with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Allison’s even appeared as a clue/answer in Cryptic Crossword (Cox & Rathvon’s iconic puzzler.)

When Céline Sawchuk (née Greb) migrated recently from the Black Forest community of Dennach, our Pacific coast region gained a freshly creative graphic designer as well as a most expressive and talented cellist. Céline’s combined 17 years of classical training with concert tours across Europe alongside her popular musician Father. (Céline actually wanted to play cello since age 3 – but only at 5 years old was she big enough to fit behind her chosen instrument.)

Uniting a range of rich cultural traditions, Allison and Céline deliver musical joy and wonderment this holiday season in the fabulous Charlie White Theatre.

Allison Crowe’s original tunes are sung by the chimney, together with gifts from the modern canon of Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, The Beatles and Patty Griffin. The pair’s sleighful of traditionals and classics is bound to feature selections from such favourites as “Silent Night”, La Vie en Rose”, “Es ist ein ros Entsprungen”, “Soul Cake”, “Wexford Carol”, “In the Bleak Midwinter” and plenty more delights – perhaps even a plum from Broadway!

"Allison Crowe's voice is as much a manifestation of Christmas spirit today as Bing Crosby's was in 1942. It's as warm as an open fire; as gorgeous as snow-frosted evergreens; as tender as that hug you give your mother on Christmas day" The Pique

Happy Birthday to a child who’s moved 74 times ’round the seasons, skated o’er plenty clear frozen streams – and, as she’s circled, given us music of profound truth and beauty. Joni Mitchell, the great artist born on this date in Fort Macleod, Alberta – salut!

From Joni’s “Blue” album – in tribute, compatriot Allison Crowe with “River”:

Aye, it's all coming along very nicely. We'll start talking more about the show in coming weeks. With Christmas/holiday season events I'm mindful that folks don't want to face the hectic season too soon. Though some stores had Christmas trees+ on display plenty early this year!

We did receive, just today, this portrait of cellist Céline Sawchuk by photographer Howard Fry. Céline, of German, Mongolian, and Romanian heritage, joins Allison Crowe this year for Tidings - adding new tones to the repertoire.

Allison Crowe and Celine Sawchuk brought “Tidings” to the fabulous Charlie White Theatre in Sidney, BC – celebrating the season with a lovely, warm, audience. Music-lover Margaret-Anne Paton was front-row centre and sends us these visual mementoes of an evening filled with beauty and joy, and, well, good tidings  :) Perennial favourites in the repertoire are joined this year with new treats, including “La Vie en Rose”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Tochter Zion”.

Thanks to all who came out!
