The rail bridge over the Interstate appears to be old with no updates, although like our local rail bridges appears to have been raised.

There is even a crack in the concrete abutment on the right. I expect that this bridge will need to be replaced after the stress of the train wreck.

Train-wrecked bridge replaced by a train-wreck administration?

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Some interesting and relevant information released from the National Transportation Safety Board today:

  • Inward-facing video with audio captured the crew’s actions and their conversations. A forward-facing video with audio captured conditions in front of the locomotive as well as external sounds.
  • The crew was not observed to use any personal electronic devices during the timeframe reviewed.
  • About six seconds prior to the derailment, the engineer made a comment regarding an over speed condition.
  • The engineer’s actions were consistent with the application of the locomotive’s brakes just before the recording ended. It did not appear the engineer placed the brake handle in emergency-braking mode.
  • The recording ended as the locomotive was tilting and the crew was bracing for impact.
  • The final recorded speed of the locomotive was 78 mph.

That video of the locomotive being hauled away on the road was pretty awesome to see!

Two people were killed in a crash involving a freight train and an Amtrak passenger train early Sunday in South Carolina.

Amtrak Train 91 was traveling between New York and Miami with 147 people aboard when it collided with a CSX freight train in Cayce at about 2:35 a.m., derailing the lead engine and some passenger cars, Amtrak said in a statement.

The CSX train was stationary on the tracks, "awaiting a later movement," when the collision occurred, Gov. Henry McMaster said in a press conference Sunday morning.

It looks as though the CSX train was not fully pulled onto the siding and there was some sideswiping.  Not a direct "rear-ender".

Human error again. Glad we don't have Amtrak running trains here on the Island?

Last week, an Amtrak train carrying members of Congress to a Republican retreat in West Virginia struck a truck near Charlottesville, Virginia.
Investigators looking into the crash are focusing on the actions of the driver of a truck, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.
In mid-January, a pastor and his wife were killed in Nash County in North Carolina when their SUV was hit by an Amtrak train.
The crash occurred after the driver maneuvered the vehicle around the lowered crossing arm.

Well with the amount of trains that we have running on the island I'm pretty sure Amtrak could handle it safely.
