We've visited Munich several times. They have height restrictions on buildings and it's a lovely city. Most of Paris skyscrapers are at la Defense so the skyline is attractive...

Are those cities "lovely" due to height restrictions though? Many would argue that New York City, Chicago, Dubai and even London, are "lovely" because of their tall buildings. It's certainly a matter of taste, but if urban sprawl is to ever be contained, then building "up" is pretty much the only option (at least until you convince people that living underground is the way of the future).

It's funny how locals get apoplectic about any structure over 4 floors. What would happen if this were proposed for the heart of downtown Victoria? More on this project here: http://bingthomarchi...nelson-project/

That whole area of Vancouver will be the next area with lots of 40+ storey towers. St. Paul's is moving in a few years, so I imagine at some point the old Burrard hospital will be replaced by towers too.

^ most likely with the facade as its base (base of the new tower)

FWIW, this project was approved by Council after two days of Public Hearings. Nice to see something move forward in the face of so much preservationist opposition.

Wow, that's crazy looking. Just goes to show how awesome architecture can be when you've got $2,000 per square foot backing your digs.

While we get excited here with 15-storey rectangular boxes. I sometimes feel like the lower mainland exists in an alternate universe.

It's us who exist in that alternate universe.

Can't wait for that world-class sewage treatment plant to rise on the harbour. It should fit in with the TrendWest building just fine :)

To be fair, there are lots of boring boxes in Vancouver too, just higher. This tower is more of an exception along the lines of Wall Centre and Shangri-La.

Which is at least 3 more than anything being built* or even planned for Victoria. I suppose there is still a remote chance that Hudson Place will surprise us with some innovative design, but I have my doubts.

* I will give some props to 1515 Douglas/750 Pandora for not being a strictly rectilinear box, but it loses a few points for not doing more to challenge the table-top skyline issue that plagues downtown.

It's a waste of time comparing the architecture of a work class city like Vancouver with ye olde Victoria. Would you expect Saskatoon to look anything like San Fransisco.

Besides, we are trending in the right direction. 10 years ago a 29 floor building would have been a pipe dream, yet we are on the brink of just that.

I think we should always be looking to one of our nearest neighbours for inspiration. We seem to have no issues following them for SJW issues (low-barrier shelters, "safe" injection sites, illegal storefront pot shops, tent cities etc.), why not something beneficial for a change?

* presumably "world class"

That's all well and good, but we need to frame that in the context that we aren't in the market for 57 storey skyscrapers, or anything even remotely close to that.

I'd be OK with some 20 storey buildings that weren't just shoe boxes turned on end. Curves anyone? Non-right angles?
