Northern Gateway was rejected. Not going to happen. 

 

Makes no sense to ban oil traffic on the northern end, let's put all the tankers in the population/economic center… great idea

Screw the pipeline, just increase the number of rail cars carrying bitumen exponentially, politics be damned.

Any idea where those refineries in Washington State get the crude they refine? I wonder if the oil just bubbles up from under the ground at Cherry Point...it couldn't possibly process crude that's delivered via ocean tanker from Alaska, pipeline from Alberta and rail from Alberta and North Dakota...

Here is the map at to where WA state gets its crude from.  I don't see any pipelines coming from Alberta

 

Again, just an empty threat from Alberta, just increase the flow from WA state and stop all Alberta products destined for BC or our ports.  Time to play hardball, we hold all the cards

Odd that your unreferenced schematic does not note the laden crude tankers bringing in crude from Alaska right off the coast of Vancouver Island. Odd. 

 

Anyway, we (BC) hold none of the cards. Pipelines are federal jurisdiction. 

 

As Catherine McKenna said yesterday in Question Period regarding KM TMX:

- It is in the National Interest

- Feds clearly have jurisdiction

- The project is going forward

In operation since 1954, the Puget Sound pipeline system ships Canadian crude oil products via the Trans Mountain pipeline system from Abbotsford, British Columbia, for delivery to Washington State refineries in Anacortes, Cherry Point and Ferndale.

The graphic is from 2013, and it is in reference to refined products, not crude oil. The same website has this information for the source of crude oil, with 26% coming from Alberta via the existing Trans Mountain pipeline, which forks in Sumas to supply refineries in Anacrotes and Ferndale.

Furthermore, "increase the supply from Washington State" means supporting the transport of crude oil from Alaska through the Strait. There is no "have your cake and eat it too" option here. We either get tankers carrying Canadian goods to market in the Strait, or we get tankers carrying American goods to be sold to Canada through the Strait.

There are literally two passing by right now, according to vesselfinder.com.

Right now there are 10 Oil Tankers within 100km of Victoria
