More than 8,300 Hudson’s Bay employees will be laid off by Sunday when Canada’s oldest company closes its doors.

In a motion filed on Monday, Hudson’s Bay stated it will have terminated 8,347 or 89 per cent of its employees by June 1 following the completion of its liquidation sale. An additional 899 employees will be let go around June 15, the company said.

This is a breaking news story. More to come.

Name change in the works, no that the crazy woman will not win the leases?

Maybe not.... For example "Complexe Les Ailes" shopping centre in Montreal kept its name despite the chain store going bankrupt around 2005.

I think the brand is now owned by the same guy that opened the new Zellers in Edmonton, with plans to revive the "Les Ailes" brand as well

Both Montreal and Toronto also have an Eaton Centre, despite the store going bankrupt a quarter century ago.

Edit: Complexe les Ailes became part of the Eaton Centre located next door in 2018.

CHEK 6 reporting tonight on a rumour that the ever fabulous Market Garden is opening a second location in the old Bay location, in part of what appears to be two floors in the main entrance area, called Sabayons.  A nod to the original Saba building at that location, the Bay and Eatons all mashed into one word.

How nice would that be even just on that corner.

^ oh. A quick google search tells me this has been in the works since at least September. Sabayons has a webpage and instagram already, shared by the market garden.

Good news all around.

That’s probably the best news for downtown Victoria in a very long time.

I live downtown and am absolutely thrilled about this.  Something that's great for locals, and very well-located for tourists too.  Perfect.

Yes. They’ve done an incredible job at the Catherine Street store. All class.

Agreed. This is great for downtown residents.
Especially with the no frills opening this week. We’re well served now.

I imagine it is too big a space for just grocery. Maybe they’re branching into retail?

Yes, they might be. Also, maybe the space will be broken up. Each floor of the Bay is massive.

I have also heard that Winners is eyeing a relocation to a Bay floor.

Maybe it's that corner where they had the nice handbags etc. on the main floor.  That was always a cool part of the store.  Tourist-facing, a bit different than the rest.

If you peak in the window at the corner they have a sign up over the escalators.

Market Garden: Beloved grocery store poised for downtown expansion

https://cheknews.ca/...ansion-1293949/

“Obviously it is a very important building and a very important corner downtown,” Bray said. “I think they’re hoping to open very soon, and it’s going to be a pop-up concept initially.”

Still, the permanent signage visible from outside hints at something more lasting than a pop-up.

Their IG from September shows 2x 50’ semis unloading. Weird this is just news now.
