Who told them there was going to be a train? Seems to me like everyone except the ICF has been saying no train for a decade.

Stew did kind of trumpet a commuter train a few years ago...

^ So Langford Mayor and council relied on themselves?

Is the agreement between Pacific FC and Langford public? The agreement between the HC and Victoria is. Would be interesting to read exactly what was promised and what PFC is paying.

But I do not think there were any promises...  Just pave it and use it as another option for a bus route.  Could even have some Sooke buses use it.

They relied on the ICF, and the goodwill that all municipalities along the line showed towards preserving rail, provincial support by the Liberals, then provincial review by the NDP, and the support for alternative transportation by all levels of government, federal funding prospects, the need for a West Shore frequent transit connection, and support by developers at Westhills and Bayview.

It’s not that Langford council just liked it and went with it. The train was the most logical transit solution for the stadium. Victoria just didn’t grow fast enough over the last 20 years, like we’re projected to grow over the next.

And when did the day liner stop running? It was either 2009 or 2013, in my head. I can Google it but that’s what Watcher is for, our own E&N encyclopedia!

So there was a passenger train running there while all that development was happening. It was rolling in the right direction then the train stopped and all the reports started getting published (Young jokes lots about all the reports he has).

Split the difference. It was 2011.

...the Island Corridor Foundation (ICF)...is supposed to manage the rail line, surrounding land and other assets — together worth about $337 million — in the public interest. It has been working, unsuccessfully, on restoring passenger rail service shut down in 2011 because the poorly maintained track was too dangerous to use...

There we go. So up until 2011, a train was running. Westhills Stadium was built years earlier, was it not?

We so easily throw people under the bus (or train) when history wasn't quite like we remember it.

PFC soccer started in 2018...  Not quite so sure there was any home of a train at that time...  The rail span and new bridge was removed and new bridge up before PFC soccer was greenlit.  I think we knw back then the train wasn't happening
