Flying Pig's Gastown location, pictured, gives a sense of the chain's interior design treatment expected at the Victoria location set to open later this year at Yates and Wharf streets.

Vancouver’s Flying Pig chain of restaurants will be expanding to Vancouver Island later this year with a location at Yates and Wharf streets in downtown Victoria, Citified has learned.

Highly regarded on the lower Mainland for its brunch fare and relaxed dining atmospheres, Flying Pig’s trio of vintage-inspired locations are situated in downtown Vancouver’s Yaletown and Gastown districts and in the former Olympic Village neighbourhood south of the downtown core.

“Our backgrounds are influenced by a strong Canadian work ethic and our roots are planted in kitchens all around Vancouver. We refer to our restaurant[s] as a ‘nouveau Canadian Bistro,’ reads a statement on company’s website. [Full article]

We've been to the Gastown and Yaletown locations. It's a good restaurant, and will compete with The Keg and Milestones. It's not cheap, but if you want cheap you'll go to The Warehouse around the corner.

Believe it or not, Mike K. and I dined there about 3 years ago, Yaletown location, day after a show we went to together in Vancouver at Rogers

EDIT:  September 2014.

I'd be extra excited about this if I thought the exterior of the building was going to be restored.

It was beautiful before the "moderization" began. Then it gradually was transformed...

Almost as bad as today:

Is the original building actually under there somewhere? If so, it must have been difficult getting those window openings in through all the layers of concrete and masonry...

That's the million dollar question. I suspect all those beautiful arches were forever lost during the mid-century moderne "update".  :(

Oh I bet they are in there. This is a good addition. They do a reasonably cheap lunch and breakfast.

Word on the street is this location is now under new ownership and may not continue on as Flying Pig.

Matt, have you heard anything?

Isn't it some kind of rule that location has to change every year or two?  :)

Ok, so we’ve got a confirmation now that the restaurant will rebrand and be managed by a new group. The owners will remain the same.

I believe J.R. Slims will be the latest incarnation of this space. Can't find any info yet beyond a landing page (https://jrslims.ca/) but Google Maps is showing that as the name of the space.

So will it be a restaurant that only serves rabbit or is the image meant to imply the likely fleeting nature of the establishment in this location?

Ah, here we go. Former Sticky Wicket manager:

Pretty standard menu. Like they skimmed the top dozen items off the Original Joe's menu.

Best of luck to them. Won’t be easy with the rent on that place.
