Wow, I hadn't seen this whole mess. This sounds like a big problem for the league owners... although given the lawsuit it doesn't sound like the financials for the streaming were working out too well anyways.

Maybe just stream the games on Youtube and build up support through exposure?

It's the investment that the TV deal was bringing to the league.  I don't know if they can survive without it.

Manuel Veth is reporting that PFC is up for sale...

Have a bad feeling about this.

February 13th:

The city said council has supported other amendments to the stadium-use agreement requested by Pacific FC, including stadium exclusivity provisions and increased revenue-sharing options.

“While negotiations are complex and involve numerous intertwined agreements between the city and PFC, the city has presented a mutually beneficial offer of a new five-year use agreement to PFC,” the city’s post said.

“The city is optimistic that this will be finalized in the coming days and that PFC will continue to play in Langford for years to come.”

The delay in a new agreement, which would have automatically been triggered on June 30 if the soccer team chose to do so, fuelled rumours on social media last month that the team would move out of Langford.

But the city and the team both said they were working on a new deal.

Pacific FC opens its season at home on April 13 against HFX Wanderers FC of Halifax.

The epithet reads: RIP Victoria Highlanders. Born in 2008 in the USL Premier Development League. Died in 2024 in League1 B.C.

The Highlanders era in local soccer came to a close with the announcement this week that the club will cease operations immediately. The defending League1 B.C. champion Highlanders were set to play the professional club Pacific FC of the Canadian Premier League in the all-Island opening-round derby in the Voyageurs Cup Canadian Championship, this nation’s version of the FA Cup, on May 1 at Starlight Stadium.

Pacific FC will play its 2024 Canadian Premier League soccer season in Starlight Stadium with the foundation possibly being laid for several more seasons in the Langford facility.

The City of Langford council approved a one-year stadium use agreement with PFC, the city announced Wednesday. According to Langford, contract negotiations were triggered when Pacific FC did not exercise its unilateral right to renew the contract for another five-year term on June 30, 2023.

“Knowing how important the team is to the community, and the wider region, council directed staff to negotiate another five-year contract that benefits the club and the community,” a City of Langford statement said.

“While the city would have preferred a new five-year agreement to solidify PFC’s long-term future in Langford, at PFC’s request, the city agreed to a one-year term to allow the parties to negotiate more fully on a longer-term contract. This one-year agreement includes improvements, and additions to the previous contract terms, as requested by PFC.”

The statement did not elaborate on what the additions and improvements to the previous contract will entail. The city added it is working with PFC to secure a five-year agreement before the end of the 2024 season.

From a media invite:

Chef Branko Mustafovic, of Collective Catering, food providers for Starlight Stadium, will be sharing samples of the new food items on this season’s menu including:

Nashville Chicken Stripes

Meal-sized poutine

New York Style Pizza (new recipe)

Trident Burger

Media and special guests will be able to weigh in on three different versions of a brand new ‘Trident Burger’ in a blind taste test. The burger that receives the most votes will be served at Starlight Stadium throughout the season.

A sticking point, reportedly, is the slowness of completing a north grandstand to fully enclose the stadium and bring it to a capacity of about 10,000.

“Council had budgeted money to finish off those plans,” said Goodmanson.

“There were some plans done in 2021 and early 2022. But we know the team and the facility need more than what those plans produced. So we are going to refine those plans more on the assumption we are going to have a five-year deal. Then we can have a plan we can take to the public for a referendum and continue on.”

The existing 6,000 seats have only sold out for a few notable soccer games such as PFC’s Canadian Championship tilt in 2021 against the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS, PFC’s CONCACAF League games in 2022, a Whitecaps CONCACAF Champions League game this year and two games featuring the 2020 Tokyo Olympic-champion Canadian women’s team against Nigeria and Australia.

It is worth it for those occasions, said PFC managing-director Paul Beirne: “They had to turn people away for some recent games at Starlight [Whitecaps CONCACAF game against UANL Tigres of Mexico and the Canada-Australia women’s game], so mid-size stadiums are super-important for soccer in Canada.”

^^ Of note, the home opener this year drew about 4,300 people. 6,000 seats is more than adequate.

So many rumours floating around that it’s tough to parse what’s real and what isn’t.
