aren't the big three clubs just "guests" in MLS?  in any event that's a good question.

Exactly. CSA doesn't sanction MLS, yet these three Canadian clubs certainly aren't getting any pushback to play in CPL, because CONCACAF makes far more money with them being in MLS than they would if they were in CPL.

It's absolutely ridiculous that OSEG was essentially bullied out of having a league next year. They were basically told to play in the Canadian domestic league or not to play at all. Yet CONCACAF has the balls to say the exact opposite about the three MLS clubs.

Can you imagine if Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver all openly stated they were going to move to CPL? CONCACAF would be throwing a tantrum losing that much revenue.

The MLS ownership model is weird.  The 3 canadian MLS teams are actually "owned" by the MLS directly (as are all teams in the league). They can't just leave the MLS.

Indirectly they can leave, it's just a fairly complicated process. For instance, LAFC exists because their "shareholders" (i.e. owners) bought Chivas USA for $100 million when that club was in the process of dissolving.

So any of the three Canadian clubs could essentially dissolve and then re-create in CPL. It would be a complicated process, once further complicated by the fact that MLS wants each of those market, CONCACAF wants the share of revenue it gets via MLS, and CSA wants to have a presence in MLS.

But it's been done before. Miami Fusion was dissolved from MLS and then a re-created version of the team appeared in the NPSL years later.

That's a possibility.  Another wrinkle is the clubs don't own the players' rights.  The players are under contract with MLS directly. If a team leaves, the players stay under contract with MLS and a "draft" is held by the other teams for those players.

The MLS is a very odd league in many ways.  It's been described as a ponzi scheme that relies on the now annual expansion fees charged to new clubs.  Given the rapid pace of expansion, I wouldn't be surprised if 5 years from now there are 40 clubs and it gets split into 2 tiers, with relegation.

If the league continues to grow the MLS clubs will also lose their exemption. Currently they are not required to move because the level of competition is much higher in MLS. If the CanPL teams start wining games regularly in the Voyageurs Cup (as Calgary did this year) and the league attendances grow I believe that the three teams will be required to move within a decade.

There is also BTW a lower-level team in Thunder Bay that could be required to play in Ontario but has maintained their exemption to stay in USL2 as the CSA et al recognize that it makes more sense to stay in that league.

And does it make more sense for TFC2 to play in USL1 vs the CPL? Not really, but again, this issue has nothing to do with skill or talent or 'right fit', but rather with money.

CONCACAF and CSA aren't touching MLS clubs or their affiliates with a ten foot pole.

Unless something catastrophic happens to MLS, the three Canadian clubs aren't ever leaving that league for CPL. You think MLS is going to pay back the expansion fees for those three teams...I believe it's $80 million for the three of them. You think those teams are going to lose the revenue source of fans paying to see the likes of Ibrahimovic or Schweinsteiger or Rooney or whoever the next European superstar has been that comes over is? Never going to happen. MLS is the NFL and the CPL is the CFL, and that is never going to change.

More likely we get 2 or 3 NFL teams in Canada than 2 or 3 Canadian MLS teams move to CPL, that's for sure.

I think you misunderstand how franchise teams work. Toronto paid $10M to enter MLS (2005), Vancouver $35M(2009), Montreal paid $40M (2010). Each franchise can now be sold for somewhere in excess of $80M each to US cities eager to enter MLS.

The three clubs would make money by moving to the CanPL or simply closing up shop to make room for teams in those cities.

Thierry Henry is the new head coach of the Montreal Impact.

The Major League Soccer team says Henry has signed a two-year deal with an option for 2022.

Henry played in four World Cup tournaments with France and is the country's all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 123 games.
