PACIFIC FC 1 VANCOUVER FC 0
Manny Aparicio threw the first splash of gasoline on a B.C. soccer derby that could turn into a raging fire in the Canadian Premier League. The darting midfielder went over to the Vancouver FC fan section in the crowd of 4,825 at Starlight Stadium and pointed to the Trident logo on his jersey after scoring at 81 minutes to give Pacific FC a 1-0 season-opening victory.

Is the CPL in Trouble?
The news that the CSB has bought York United and is now controlled more or less by the league has many Canadian soccer fans worrying about the financial viability of their league and if it will last.

Is there ever a path for PFC to actually bump up to MLS tier? Thats kind of how European football leagues work, right?

The longer answer is because like most other north american sports leagues, MLS is co-owned by the teams so there's no relegation.

Fourth-seed PFC advanced to the semifinal after recording successive 1-0 victories over fifth-seed York United at Starlight Stadium in the first round of the post-season and over third-seed HFX Wanderers in the quarter-final at Halifax. But the playoff whirlwind finally caught up with the Tridents.
Meilleur-Giguère said the Tridents were buoyed Saturday by the group of fans who made the trek across the Rockies to support the team in the semifinal. But it was the large home crowd at Spruce Meadows that got to cheer loudest.
“Cavalry was the most consistent team near the end of the season,” said PFC head coach James Merriman.
“We can take a lot of positives looking ahead as we continue to learn, improve and grow as a team.”

Cavalry FC is moving its first-round CONCACAF Champions Cup game in February to Starlight Stadium in Langford, B.C., to escape the Alberta cold.
The Calgary-based team, which qualified for CONCACAF’s elite club championship by finishing first in the Canadian Premier League regular season, hosts MLS side Orlando City SC in the opening round of the 27-team CONCACAF competition.
“As the northernmost club in CONCACAF, we are acutely aware of the possible risks that playing in February on natural grass may pose,” Cavalry president Ian Allison said in a statement. “We are, after all, more than 51 degrees north of the southernmost of the 41 members of CONCACAF. Despite the unseasonably mild start we have had to western Canadian winter, the frost is already quite deep in the sub-surface of our pitch.

That's a strange way to put it.

Nothing says "unseasonably mild winter weather" quite like deep sub-surface frost a week before winter even officially begins.

As the newest acquisition by Langley-based Vancouver FC, Surrey’s Grady McDonnell, 15, becomes the youngest signing in Canadian Premier League history, superseding teammate Taryck ‘TJ’ Tahid, who was 16 years and 16 days old when he inked his first professional contract with the club in May 2023.
“I’m incredibly humbled and excited for the opportunity to compete in a professional environment at my age,” said McDonnell. “This kind of opportunity is what I’ve always wanted and the fact that I’m able to achieve this goal with my hometown team, and to play in front of my friends and family, is all I could ask for.”

Sounds to me like PFC wants another sweetheart deal to play at the stadium and good on them for trying. Don’t know where else they think they are going to play or why the taxpayer should subsidize them but good luck.
