Just looked this up right after I posted that, and was surprised. Interesting results. However, still doesn't change the fact that we probably shouldn't have a football team named after a racial slur.

I wrote a paper in university wherein I defended the use of the University of North Dakota athletics department using Fighting Sioux as their nickname (a name they have since changed). Mind you, this was in 2006, but at the time the majority of the research I did suggested the name was actually beneficial to the Sioux people and encouraged by them. Got a 92% on the paper...wonder what it would get today. Think I still have it at the parents' house.

why is it a racial slur if those that it is allegedly directed at do not consider it as such?
should we start a "names commission" to determine what names are ok and which are not?
when was the last time "redskin" was used by someone in real life to talk down to an indigenous person?
what do we do with THIS TEAM or LEAGUE? awkward.

But you are conveniently bypassing the whole issue of offensiveness, keeping in mind there is a spectrum from mildly politically incorrect all the way to blatantly racist.
I'm not going to be the one to tell an indigenous person the term "Redskin" is acceptable.

Anyway, it's not like Dan Snyder woke up Woke one day. It was only when sponsors stirred things up the Redskins name change became a thing.
We have a local team called the Victoria Braves. That's an eastern term not used locally. Like "Eskimo"--not really an indigenous term but one white people imposed on those peoples.

Awkward, how so?
The Six Nations Chiefs lineup is predominantly comprised of indigenous players, and get their name from the Six Nations Indian Reserve located nearby.
Big difference between their name and lineup composition compared to the Redskins in the NFL.

we have a local football team with a name that people have not clued into yet. people have yet to “discover” it is offensive.

The link between the Victoria Rebels name and the Confederacy is tenuous.

we've named places with anglicized native names like saanich. did we ask permission?
and i posted this earlier if we go along with some team name changes like braves and chiefs why the heck do we have Christopher Columbus as part of our province name and Victoria and Vancouver as our names around here?

i'm truly sorry you can't see the much broader picture. the hypocrisy. the problems that all this racial justice causes. or at the very least the few real problems it solves.
it's like arguing with a flea.

Curse racial justice! Can't we all go back to a day when caucasians could say and do anything with no fear of repercussions? I truly feel sorry for you that you feel aggrieved when historically marginalized populations receive any form of redress, however trivial.
