SoCal has a long history of minor-pro hockey (Bakersfield and especially San Diego) and P-S will have a 10,000-seat arena, not to mention its in the same TZ so getting players to the big club in a hurry won't present a problem. It makes at least as much sense as the Canuck's having Utica NY, clear across the continent, as their affiliate.

Thanks for that, very interesting. Will forecasted /future/ attendances have had any bearing on the location and when you say Palm Springs do you mean Palm Springs or somewhere in the valley ??

No it'll be in downtown Palm Springs.
That said at the same time last year there was an announcement for a 12,000 seat venue in Palm Desert. It appears both will proceed as planned. The downtown AHL/"hockey" facility is a joint proposal by the Oak View Group and the Agua Caliente band/Cahuilla Indians.
The larger facility was actually announced over a year ago, and includes the arena, a resort hotel, and a senior living center with medical facilities on 125 acres in Palm Desert.

Internet rumbling suggest that the owners have decided on Seattle Kraken as the franchise name. Cue exclamations of "Let's get Kraken!" across social media.

Canadians love Palm Springs so that will help attendance

I believe someone or some corporate entity owns the rights but "somehow" IMO the Seattle group should've tried to obtain and resurrect (one of) the old Seattle Metropolitans or even the Totems names. The 'Kraken' sucks....

Yeah, I honestly think it's one of the best names in the league if that is what they go with. And the logo could be pretty badass.

It's not a bad name...if your a Nordic hockey team. What does the kracken have to do with Seattle? Everyone knows there are no krackens in the Pacific...

Too many "K" sounds in there. One "K" works (Sharks, Ducks, 'Nucks, Hawks, etc.), but having two can be awkward. (I suppose we should be relieved that they didn't go with "Killer Kraken".)
It also doesn't seem to lend itself to informal abbreviations/alternative nicknames. The Krak? The Krak House? I'm thinking people would end up calling them the Squid. Habs versus Squid. The Squid are on a roll, they've won five in a row, etc.
And then there's that whole angle re: the Kraken suck. No, they really do suck. I'm not averse to a play on words now and then, but that one is dead on arrival. Just imagine watching a game with Mike K. and how many times you'd have to suffer through that.

Methinks it's an odd combination of a familiar thing (Octopus) that could resonate equally well in many different places (similar to Sharks, Bears, Tigers, Lions, Jets, etc.) being referred to by a term that carries a much more specific connotation for most people, which thus displaces the thing from the Seattle context. Seattle + Octopus works, but Seattle + Kraken seems like a misdirection.
San Jose Sharks San Jose White Pointers
Chicago Bears Chicago Polar Bears
Detroit Tigers Detroit Siberian Tigers
Detroit Lions Detroit Lords of the Serengeti
Winnipeg Jets Winnipeg F-14 Tomcats
(Then again, the Cincinnati Bengals would seem to be proof that this sort of thing can nevertheless work. Any others like that? Obviously many team names don't fit their current locales because the franchises were relocated at one point or another, but how many teams have names that were a bit off right from the start?)

I never really understood names like The Golden Seals, Ducks, Penguins for hockey teams. As team names they seemed to miss the mark. Not that ducks can't be a little scrappy, (never met a penguin), and seals can get pretty damned troublesome, but seriously, how can they compete against hawks, and panthers, and bears and sharks and other predators?

Jacksonville Jaguars. But I can hear jaguars everywhere asking why Lions and Tigers should get a pass if Jaguars don't. I guess we've been using Lions and Tigers as nicknames for so long we don't even think about their relevance to place. They transcend any particular relevance to the place or the sport.
