Newly elected 19-year-old councillor Ned Taylor has already weighed in on the amalgamation issue during a CFAX interview, stating that he believes the Westshore and the Peninsula should amalgamate ahead of Saanich and Victoria and the core.

Further to that, Taylor says he believes wealthier individuals should pay more in taxes. By wealth he referred to owners of nicer/more valuable properties should pay more as a percentage than those who live in less valuable properties.

Did he say why he thinks that? Why not have the two largest set an example?

He didn't get into it but I suspect that was his first political deke.

"So, how about that amalgamation issue?"

"Love it! ...in Sidney!"

I am not sure that is what he meant but I was not listening that closely.   I do think he was suggesting different mill rates for properties

Yes, that's what he was suggesting. You own a nice house in a nice neighbourhood? Pay more than the guy who owns a not-so-nice house in an average neighbourhood.

I heard it. It wasn’t malicious. And generally those people already do pay more because of higher assessment values.

Right, but that’s the way it has been for time immemorial. What the young councillor was suggesting was for them to pay even more.

Socialists(progressives) never get tired of spending other peoples money. Gives folks real incentive to thrive when there are a bunch of self entitled at the end of the line with their hands out for your money.

I don't think the caller understood the concept of the mill rate. It really wasn't clear to me if Ned was advocating for different mill rates.

New record. In power for 1 day and no longer wants a system that he advocated for 3 days ago. He must have figured out that amalgamation will reduce the number of people doing his job!

Keep doing this Ned and the rough ride has only started bud.

I wonder if Ned understands the concept of a mill rate.

Well neither the caller, Ned, or Joe Perkins mentioned the term so I really do wonder.

Regardless of the mill rate, he specifically said that people living at “Ten Mile Point” maybe should “pay a little more” than the guy in “Gordon Head.”

The caller was concerned that those who spent their money wisely and were able to purchase nicer homes or (he specifically alluded to) maintain their properties well (which raises the home’s value and therefore raises the taxes) would be unfairly punished as politicians scramble to find new revenue sources.

The naïveté of youth really comes through when you listen to Taylor. We were all there once. Heck I still recall getting interested in the development industry as a bushy eyed young Mike in his first year of university. But in retrospect I was just a kid who thought he had everything figured out and solutions to major issues were just around the bend. Sigh, those were the days.

That's what happens when Saanich elect kids.

Ned is 23 years old.  Experience in the work force is a part time position at a housing society.  From his application it appears he still lives with his parents.

Not knocking him. But I would not of elect someone to help run a municipality who has never worked full time and lives at home with his parents.

Instead of contradicting his platform by suggesting raising some property taxes, take some time and learn the job.

Ned's 19. Zac is the 23 year old.

Also where do you guys see he was pro-amalgamation? His flier I got lists "key points" as "Innovative solutions for affordable housing" "emply weekend by-law officer to ensure proper enforcement seven days a week" "Complete ban on single-use plastic bags and styrofoam containers" "work to ensure more affordable tax rates".

I also looked throug https://www.votened.org/platform and don't see any mention one way or the other about amalgamation.

Taylor, who received a surprise visit from B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver during his victory celebration Saturday, said he is “really intrigued” by the vote on whether to create a Citizens’ Assembly to study amalgamation –57 per cent of voters in Saanich and 66 per cent in Victoria endorsed exploring the issue.

“I look forward to working with council and staff to take the next steps on this topic,” Taylor said.

While it would be weird to say it that way if he was against it keep in mind the vote was if we should look into it not if we should do it. Someone can look forward to looking into and learning about something they don't necessarily believe is the right move for where they live/represent.

Thanks, got the two mixed up.
