Really the only impact this may have is in suicide by gun. It will in no way have any impact on gang crime or remove any guns off the streets.

Its tokenism vote buying for folks that have zero clue about how strict the current handgun laws and regulations are.

My bet is Ben will try and put it on the agenda in a similar fashion to him trying to ban the snowbirds. I bet he'll make some brave claim that there are refugees from war-torn countries that are suffering because they live in fear thinking some male white supremacist has access to a handgun but they just dont know who....He'll claim he has received dozens of calls from people who live in fear every day and hundreds of letters of support....which of course are far more legitimate than the 29,000 BHP petition or the hundreds of letters sent to council over Clover Point, because they weren't legitimately democratic or scientific.

I feel like City Council really has lost the plot line on far too many things.  Here - $180,000 on neighborhood grants - the $250,000 "saved" being squandered on Clover Point, and I'm sure the list goes on.  Meanwhile things that could make a significant difference to Victorians and make their lives measurably better go without doing.  Shore power is going to cost the GVHA $24Million dollars - but will measurably reduce emissions - and the cruise industry is a significant contributor to our economy in normal times (which WILL return at some point).  Many roads are now little more than goat trails, and the hole in the budget that will be left by the pandemic has barely been contemplated.  If anything, the city needs a core review with a view of redirecting resources towards making doing business in Victoria a little better - maybe even increasing the police budget.

Ha you fell for that :-) A quick google will tell you that the project that "saved $250K" was actually over the original budget. Maybe what Helps meant to say was that they saved $250K on the thrice upwardly revised cost.

Trying to get a read on proper social media etiquette from the VV progressive community.

I noticed, following many of our local politician and politico social media accounts, that women often describe themselves as mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, etc but rarely do I see "wife" anymore. Is that now a bad or non-progressive word? Men seem to still use husband regularly.

Thanks for the help.

From Lisa's recent email.  Indicates clearly her neutral stance on Clover Point:

"But for the rest of us, it's time for the days of driving right up to the ocean to come to an end. I know this will feel like a loss to many people. But by letting go of this practice and by thinking of something much, much bigger than ourselves, there is also a lot to be gained."

In other words, Victoria, FU.

In better news, the president of the Fairfield Gonzales Neighbourhood Association came out this morning declaring that the overwhelming majority of the members oppose the CP plan.

Her words show that she has already made up her mind and does not care what the majority think.  I think one of the problems with all the things she has done is that we are too apathetic and do nothing.  Perhaps if we did real protests, something would make her take note!

That's the only thing that will work.  The neighbours gathering on Avalon Road (with media in attendance) caused them to back off the shelter tent there pronto.

She's a bully and like all bullies she needs to be confronted for her bravado to wither.

I was talking to some businesspeople the other day.  What they said will not surprise you, but I will summarize FYI:

1.  They are hanging on by their fingernails, thanks mainly to federal wage subsidies.

2.  If there is no summer tourist season some will go bankrupt.  This may result in selling properties to developers.

3.  They regard city council as largely hostile (too many taxes, restrictions, permit problems; not enough police protection.)

4.  They are, nonetheless, very shy of criticizing council because they fear repercussions.  They are reluctant to even discuss this except among trusted confidents.

5.  Everyone wants someone with business experience as mayor or on council, but prospective candidates don't want to take further risks in an already precarious situation for what is essentially a thankless task.

6.  They express some hope that the province may step in to curb council's excesses.  (Unlikely IMO, but Ebey's statements about ending outdoor camping by March 31 may provide a politically acceptable opportunity.)

Altogether a grim prospect.  My take away is that a successful mayoral candidate (and to some extent councillor candidates) would have to be reasonably high profile with a useful background, but more or less immune to the possible negative consequences of running.  That limits the field quite a bit unless he/she were extremely public spirited.

While I certainly understand this trepidation, bold change can only come from bold action and taking a risk. Damn! That sounds like something Her Worseship would say.

March 31 is the end of the fiscal year. That’s why it’s thrown around so much.

I asked Loveday, CTJ, Andrew, Alto, Potts on twitter being that this coming Tourist Season was a wipeout have they had any meetings or plans to meet with the Chamber, Tourism Victoria, DVBA etc to hear from them.

This is the time to plan for May-September and likely the only chance of most tourist and service business to have some chance at survival.

Crickets.

FFS the core is more than parklets and food trucks and closing the odd street off.

WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP? WHERE ARE ALL THE MAYORS AND COUNCILS OF THIS REGION?

Have any of them called a war council with all the other Mayors, business groups and other civic leaders to come up with a plan for the next year?

Wheres Colin Plant as Chair of the CRD? Wheres Grace Lore? Laurel Collins?

WHERES THE PLAN?

ABSOLUTE FRICKING CRICKETS FROM ALL THESE "LEADERS"

But bike lanes, police defunding and racism...Nero is fiddling while Rome burns

Both provincial and federal. Everything ticks to that clock. That’s why the Travelodge lease was through March 31, as you cannot/should not spend next year’s budget until you know where the chips will land.

They can certainty enter into multi-year agreements, not everything has to follow a March-March cycle.

Regional recovery has been delegated to SIPP and they have created several very impressive powerpoints and 160 recommendations as a result. The plan for the next year is to study those recommendations and come up with a new powerpoint!

My take was that the plan is to get the Government(s) to give them and their partners (ie universities, FN, sigs) more money so that they could do more studies and hire more people to do those studies.

The one activity that seemed to have some meat behind it was the Ocean Tech Hub as the plan had them appointing a board and hiring a CEO in January. As far as I can tell, neither of those two things happened though.

Yes, the ocean tech hub has fallen off the stage. What's going on there?

No idea. Maybe the Feds said no to the funding request so nobody cares anymore. Heck knows local companies and beneficiaries of the hub were not willing to actually put up any of their own money!

Ex the TC, Feb 18:

”The overall direction is absolutely the right one,” Coun. Geoff Young said.  (About Clover Point)

”This park is not balanced now between pedestrians and automobiles.  It is far too automobile oriented.  And I do think we need to restore the balance somewhat.  But we do have to listen to what people have said.”

Young can be so disappointing sometimes.  Just when CTJ seemed to be recovering from the cool aid he pops up with this.  Earth to Geoff, some places are for cars, some places are for pedestrians.  We don’t always need or want “balance.” And as for listening to people, tell me another one.
