Also it sounds like his Disciples on council just went right along with the Master's motion. Thanks to all of them for dragging city politics to a new low of bad taste.

And thank you, Mayor Helps and the others who opposed it.

I fear there is no low he wouldn't stoop to, no one he wouldn't offend, in order to grab a headline and some attention for himself. Maybe he feels threatened by all the attention paid to the vets, ie, people with actual courage.

If we step back and take a broader view here, the Mayor and council asking for other people to pay us money is nothing new. In fact, at least once every couple of months I am pointing out the rejection letters.

Now asking veteran's affairs to pay us money may seem to be in bad taste, but it doesn't surprise me at all and follows the line of thinking we have seen dozens of times before. Usually Mayor Helps is the one asking other munis to pay for our failed projects or various Government offices to fund her pet ones. This time it was Ben but rest assured there will be lots more.

What concerns me most about the initial police ask for Canada Day is that this is going to become a trend by city departments whenever they want more money. They will hold us hostage on a particular event or activity and these 'one off' requests for more money will become the norm. How many times over the budget process did Del present to council and how many times did he mention not being able to cover Canada Day?

It doesn’t make sense though... if he’s doing this to grab headlines - why does he hide from the media?

I honestly think he just doesn’t have a lot of common sense

Every time he pulls one of these stunts he immediately disables his twitter account. Does he think we don't notice?

I realize now that Victorians deserve the Mayor and Council they currently have.

With apologies to exceptions to the rule like our own Nparker, complacency in politics and at election time is hardly unique to the City of Victoria, but it does speak to the utter folly of just sitting back and letting things "fall where they may" at election time.

We live in a beautiful place, one where "when it's nice here"- there's really no place nicer in the world.

But I fear the COV downtown core is lost, if not for good, certainly for the foreseeable future.

Residents will no doubt seek solace in our many surrounding offerings be they natural park, trails, lakes and the like, or make the easy drive to other shopping areas (like the West Shore).

Downtown is dirty, dangerous, unappealing, crime ridden, close to impossible to transit into efficiently, and uncomfortably "car unfriendly" once you arrive in the core.

Now there is an attack on everything that brings large numbers of residents of other municipalities downtown, with COV Councillors attacking parades, celebrations, special events, memorials, etc.

Shame really, but an incredibly sad reality, a reality that's definitely not going to be changing anytime soon.

CBC: Isitt says he regrets that this agenda coincidentally fell on June 6, a date which he called an important one in the fight against fascism, an extreme form of conservatism.

Says he is merely looking after local taxpayers by ensuring the Federal government pays its share.

Well I didn't vote for any of those four sheep and never will.

As far as I can see, his twitter account is its normal obnoxious self.

I would be more inclined to agree with Isitt on the fascism thing if he only acknowledged that totalitarianism as a whole is the problem, not a specific ideology. Note what his old leftist hero Daniel Ortega is doing to the poor people of Guatemala right now.

If anyone thinks these are the thoughts of a stable lucid person then I urge you to seek medical help...

It is unfortunate that the latter decision was taken on the 75th anniversary of D-Day, marking the landing of Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy to turn back the tide of fascism in northwestern Europe. However, an accident of agenda planning resulted in consideration of the Victoria Police Department request on that date.

More unfortunate, however, is the nefarious ways in which conservative political forces and their agents in the corporate media have chosen to distort Victoria City Council’s benign request for assistance from federal authorities, into a supposed affront to war veterans.

We should not be surprised that neofascist, “alt-right” formations such as the Proud Boys and more moderate conservative voices in the corporate media would prefer that citizens in Victoria and other communities focus on controversy — rather than on tackling the major challenges of our time: poverty and housing inaffordability; climate change and the ecological crisis; and the dangerous slide away from democratic participation and toward fearmongering and neo-fascist politics.

I was just about to come here and post that rjag. Note that he reactivated his twitter account at 1am to post this bizarre rambling rant about the alt right fascist corporate proud boys media.
