......"In October 1980, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau introduces a tougher, more rigid national energy program (NEP). During a decade-long energy crisis, the federal government wants more control over the country's energy. Ottawa also says that Alberta's oil profits must be shared throughout the country. "

The above, Federal level ****ed Alberta in a big way, nationally ****ed the province.

https://www.cbc.ca/a...-energy-program

  • The federal government's 1980 NEP had three main objectives: To boost Canadian ownership in the oil industry, to make the country a self-sufficient oil producer and to increase the federal share of energy revenue.• The Feds introduced the NEP after deadlocked negotiations with Alberta and without consulting the oil industry.• As part of the program, Trudeau launched a tax to fund the federal government's gas company Petro-Canada and gave grants to Canadian-owned oil companies.• When the world oil price was inflated by 150 per cent, Ottawa kept the national oil price at a considerably lower rate.• The federal government had created a Canadian energy policy in 1867 to ensure the country used its own coal reserves by taxing American imports.• Until 1973, the energy policy barely intervened in Alberta's oil industry. Since the 1970s energy crisis and increased world oil prices, Canadian and world government energy policies have been more interventionist.• During the 1970s, Lougheed resisted federal actions that infringed upon his province's rights and lobbied for Alberta to have more influence in Ottawa's decision-making. He believed the province's economic strength allowed Alberta the right to more national representation.• While negotiating the 1982 Constitution Act, Lougheed created an amending formula that allowed provinces to opt out of sections of the Constitution. It is known as the "notwithstanding clause."

It's well-documented in this forum that I am no fan of the current CoV council, nevertheless I don't think they are fundamentally responsible for any downturn in Alberta's oil-based economy. Can we please try and keep this thread on topic?

Oh it's already 'cost' the City of Victoria hard cold cash for example one conference that had booked into Victoria in Oct. of this year has withdrawn and moved elsewhere, it was an international auto association.  More to come on the Alberta side, cause effect etc.  Ugly stuff.

I have no idea who this guy is but I'd vote for him....!

You want to know who he is? He is a key figure in BC Proud, a part of the "Proud" network that generates racist propaganda, with connections to Neo-Nazis. He and they routinely post half-truths and outright lies of the same type used in the 2016 US election and Brexit. A vote for this guy or anyone associated with him is a vote for Vladimir Putin.

A vote for David Suzuki is a vote for ayatollah khamenei.

See, I can sound like a complete idiot too!

really? Can uou provide examples of outright lies? and his connections to neo-nazis? I hear lots of noise from 'progressives' about these white supremacists and neo-nazis...so it should be easy shouldnt it?

Talking about half-truths and outright lies, Ben Isitt is the poster child for all the nonsense and hot air when he opens his mouth.

What the left doesn't get, is that by failing to moderate their views voters gravitate towards more extreme alternatives.  Politics becomes more polarized - even at the municipal level.  It is fairly ridiculous that fiscally conservative and pragmatic individuals are painted as being alt-right neo nazis out to destroy the environment.  Similarly, progressive, pragmatic individuals should not be painted as communists out to destroy the foundations of our economy.

On the plus side, the new CoV artist in residence is Kathryn Calder of the New **rnographers. Not sure what this will mean but I do like the NPs.

Ontario Proud seems to have played some part in the turfing of Wynne and election of Ford, but Wynne wasn't getting re-elected no matter what, and the NDP are still very burnt in Ontario.

I haven't been able to find any proof of connections to Neo-Nazis. If so, I would discredit the Proud groups personally as well, but can you please provide some sources to connections beyond the use of 'Proud' being similar to the alt-right 'Proud Boys' group?

I've seen some half-truths, certainly, and some stuff out of context or exaggerated. It's certainly material presented through a right leaning lens. Outright lies though, I don't recall seeing any of those. Got examples?

Your last sentence is ridiculous and hyperbole just as bad as what Gunn puts out, so... hypocrite much?

Hm - well I'd certainly be interested in reading up on any Neo (or for that matter 'Old') Nazi links that tie him directly and verifiably to their movement T-E.

From what I can tell from their FB site he/they clearly aren't fans of the federal Liberals, or especially JT - which is perfectly fine by me - and they certainly are pro Canadian Armed Forces (also very good), they take some swipes at Victoria's historic practice of dumping sewage into the ocean and they appear to enjoy ribbing Alberta's less than stellar start to spring compared to the fine weather out here.

His online profile mentions previously working for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation; and on Twitter he continues to hold the CoV council's feet to the fire and - once again - demonstrates he's very evidently no fan of Pierre's Son. Neither am I, and I'm also no Nazi.

Obviously he's solidly to the Right of the political spectrum which, again, is no crime. No more so than being 'solidly Left'. But I see nothing so far tying him to Nazis. As noted though I'd be more than pleased to plow through it if such a link exists as I don't like the Nasty's any more than anyone else does...
