Couldn't find a View Royal thread, so posting this here

David Screech taking a lot of heat on Twitter from Brad West (PoCo Mayor) over the past couple days for not refusing to attend Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) gala due to it being partially sponsored by the Chinese Consulate and the current state of relations between Canada and China - three Canadians being held hostage, persecution of Uighurs, etc.

I would totally go to that Chinese gala. What better opportunity to give those junior bureaucrats a hard time while drinking whiskey. We may be pipsqueaks compared to superpower China but if enough small towns hassled them it might make an impact. Besides, it's just the right thing to do.

West isn’t messing around here. He’s right. The optics of this are terrible. And Screech is not doing himself any favours.

Not just Screech getting heat. A couple weeks ago he directed the same criticism towards our own mayor.

Should be interesting to see how this all plays out among local politicians.

Right, he did indeed call out Helps. Helps have a response that was highly criticized, calling the current relations with Chinese a mild impasse (or something akin to that).

We have a clearer picture emerging of local by-election costs. Following the death of Sooke councillor Brenda Parkinson, the town will hold a by-election on September 28th. The estimated total cost will be $20,000.

Victoria's potential by-election, should Laurel Collins win a seat in the federal election, would be significantly higher (some estimates on this board suggested $200,000 but we don't have City Hall's estimated figures).

And worth every penny if a more reasonable counsellor were able to acquire a seat.

Except that there is no way Collins will be elected this time round. The Greens gave the NDP a run for their (union) money last election, with a respected incumbent, Murray Rankin, holding the seat. Collins is a nobody, the NDP have a leader few can get behind, and the Greens have some momentum. I think Victoria will be the Greens to lose.

Mind you, if anyone can help the Greens lose, it's their new Rasputin, Warren Kinsella, who will head up their war room, ugh, I mean peace room.

Don't be so sure.

Green room. The whole campaign trail is quite theatrical, really.

But are we talking a comedy or a tragedy?

(some estimates on this board suggested $200,000 but we don't have City Hall's estimated figures).

That figure came directly from the city's Chief Election Officer, Chris Coates. He was quoted in a Cleverley article from March pegging it at "about $200,000".

Here is what you have all been waiting for. No more sleepless nights wondering who voted for what and which council person isn’t playing well with others.

Now there’s an app for that. https://app.powerbi....TViNmMyMzM3NSJ9

Been waiting for this.  Perhaps someone else can chime in here but I can only find one motion of the current council that was defeated at a council meeting.  Could that possibly be right? December 13th, the very contentious checkout bag regulation implementation -an exemption for food service businesses.

I don’t think this app represents every vote taken.
It’s hard to know what the parameters are ... but it appears not to show anything close to all recent motions.

It's a good start.  Scanning down seeing where Geoff Young or Ben Issit were opposed is a good barometer for where things start to come off the rails.  You can pickup the motions based on activism.  Here is one that Geoff Young voted down.

Embed distributional, procedural, structural and inter-generational equity into the City’s corporate policies guiding hiring, staff training and professional development, procurement and civic engagement.

What exactly does that mean?  That the CoV will hire soley based on skin colour, gender and age?

Note the absences. Helps, Young, Dubow and Isitt lead the pack in missed council sessions.

Recently a Report to Nominators Presentation came before council regarding the Victoria Airport Authority. It took only five seconds. There was no discussion, simply a vote that passed in which Isitt and Dubow voted no. Anyone know anything about it?

The report is about the airport's future planning and finances.

I can only assume Ben had an issue with it and got to Dubow.

Actually it means the opposite, but then you should know that.

It means hiring more diverse staff. It means breaking down barriers for disabled applicants and employees. It means making sure that senior management never again becomes an "old boys club".  It means actually living up to the ideals of Canada as a place where everyone is entitled to a fair opportunity to succeed.
