I would be okay with a democratic system with only one choice on the ballot as an alternative.
2 is the minimum for a democracy... good example just down the road

Again, I have yet to ever speak with a single person who admits to liking Helps, Isitt, TV, etc. Who is voting for them???
I've heard it said that 5000 votes gets you in, given the current avg participation. Not hard to do with a pretty small group of volunteers. Not enough of us have yet been sufficiently motivated to leave our keyboards...?

Victorians used to say elderly voters were the explanation for everything in Victoria politics... and then one day elderly voters ceased to exist.

A hippie (sometimes spelled hippy) is a member of the counterculture of the 1960s, originally a youth movement that began in the United States during the mid-1960s and spread to other countries around the world.....
The 21st century hipster is a subculture that ostensibly emphasizes or fetishizes style, authenticity and uniqueness while paradoxically notably lacking authenticity. Members of the subculture typically do not self-identify as hipsters.... Stereotypical elements include vintage clothes and other non-mainstream fashion, skinny jeans, checked shirts, an ironic moustache or full beard, and big glasses. .....

Oh, they're still alive. In fact, there's more of them than ever. And they're still voting, because otherwise the vote counts wouldn't add up, right? But for some reason they all coincidentally agreed to start voting against their own interests. They complain constantly about what's going on, and yet they also enthusiastically support what's going on.
Then again, every voter in Victoria is doing that. Homeowners vote against themselves, park & green space lovers vote against themselves, taxpayers in general vote against themselves, downtown boosters vote against themselves, apartment hunters vote against themselves...

People concerned about crime and public safety vote against themselves...

Looks like the Mayor has bailed on her Friday presser again. Perhaps it wasn't just Twitter. Maybe she doesn't want anyone questioning her actions anymore.

The latest budget update is bleak. https://pub-victoria...ocumentId=57306
Council is going to debate options next week. Instead of cutting costs to cover what is estimated to be up to a $17M shortfall, looks like council wants to hire more of their buddies, launch new pet projects, and raid reserves to try and balance the budget.
To cover the $17M, taxes would need to be increased by 15% plus whatever shortfall is anticipated next year! Nanaimo, Vancouver and virtually every other major city in Canada have cut costs. Victoria seems to be hanging on to a belief that the Feds will bail them out.
