Actually 4 open seats.

Me - Councillors Alto, Dubow and Thornton-Joe

Thanks for the correction. My fear is that even if you are elected Stephen, you will be saddled with a crowd who are bent on solving the world's problems and could care less about fixing potholes.

That still leaves at least 3 terrible incumbents. 😔

I am not sure who "we" is in the above, but I think much of the misery of serving on council comes from the members themselves who think their job is to save the world. Stick to the boundaries of the CoV and perhaps the job will be more manageable.

The "we" is the constant criticism and harassing that councilors get for the equivalent of $10 an hour.

Now obviously I have contributed to that criticism here but folks can choose to read what I say or not. I don't cross that line and infringe on someone's personal life and harass them at the store or call them at 11PM which unfortunately is what a lot of folks in politics have to deal with day to day.

We need to see a greater number of council candidates worthy of more than $10 an hour. I'd be happy to have funds diverted from pet projects ($5000 ping pong tables anyone?) if I believed it would get us better qualified people at the council table. I already pay more than enough taxes for a city the size if Victoria.

The Queen still owns the street so it remains colonized regardless of the name.

Well, the obvious remedy is to turn the whole thing over to the FNs.  We settlers could become renters.  Everything would be great.

Despite current ret-conning, first nations peoples were settlers here themselves at one time.

A number of people feel that way. Problem is that I have seen neighbourhoods where that has happened and when the municipality isn't paying for services.

Has the city or any of the councilors said anything anywhere in support of the injured VPD officers?

This has been sent out by Victoria and Saanich:

Wednesday, June 28, 2022  |  For Immediate Release

Joint Statement from the Mayors and Police Board Chairs of Esquimalt, Saanich and Victoria

VICTORIA, BC - Today the Mayors of Esquimalt, Saanich and Victoria are issuing the following statement in support of our police departments and in recognition of our officers’ courage and selfless service:

“Yesterday in a terrible and violent act, three officers from Saanich and three from Victoria were injured in the line of duty, some with very serious injuries. When these kinds of actions happen, our police departments and our communities that support them are shaken to the core.

“To the officers who were injured and to their families, our thoughts are with you and we are sending love as you move through the following days, weeks and months in recovery. We are humbled by your service and we offer our heartfelt thanks for your courage as you stood in harm’s way to keep our communities safe.

“To all members of our departments, we want you to know that we are here to support you through this challenging and terrible incident. In times like these we all pull together, boards, sworn officers, civilian staff and management. We stand beside each other and we take care of those most affected, including the psychological trauma of being involved in an incident like this.

“To the police departments across our region and the province that have offered assistance, we thank you in advance for your help and support.

“To the public, incidents like the one experienced by Saanich and VicPD remind all of us of the courage it takes to be a police officer and of the selfless service of all our officers as they serve our communities on a daily basis, not knowing what a shift might bring. Finding ways to show support in the coming days and weeks is really important and we encourage everyone to do so.”

Raeside cartoon could be hate speech

Saturday’s Adrian Raeside cartoon included an image of the person who is experiencing mental illness, as well as a caption.

I don’t understand how this is not discrimination or even hate speech; if the caption and image referred to or discriminated against someone who is black, or Indigenous, or female, or queer, etc. it would never have been printed in the Times Colonist.

Why is it OK to discriminate against people who are experiencing mental illness? Breaking the stigma and getting those suffering the help they need is already difficult enough.

This cartoon does a disservice to everyone in our community struggling with mental illness, which is many people these days — including many youth — after the two-year stress of the pandemic.

Well Lisa, the hard truth (when it's not "your" truth) always hurts.

Proof positive, as though we needed any more, that Lisa Helps lives in her own alternate universe that unfortunately intersects with ours from time to time.

Raeside has had his hand accurately on the pulse of the City of Victoria for decades, and suddenly a lame-duck mayor who has dragged this town down into the gutter (with the assistance of Council) is going to call him out for once again hitting the nail on the head?

RAESIDE RULES!

If Ms Helps had cared even a fraction about the majority of her constituents as she did about virtue signaling, she might have accomplished something of value over the past 8 years.

Well Lisa, the hard truth (when it's not "your" truth) always hurts.

Lisa's universe implies that everyone on the street has a mental illness instead of being there because they are exploiting a system that gives them everything for free and encourages bad behaviour.

Is getting drunk and unruly mental illness? Raeside describes the person as a street crazy, holding a can of liquor. There is nothing implying he has a mental illness, but he could be highly intoxicated and not thinking straight.
