They say that life is a mirror of ourselves... left is right etc.

On that note, I find it interesting that many Trump supporters say that the left is trying to suppress what they have to say, and yet, they champion a man who does his best to squash all dissent, all other points of view.

Trump, in turn, staying with the mirror theme, seems to champion dictators over democratically elected leaders. To me this says that he feels like he's weak and therefore admires those people whom he feels are strong. Over compensation occurs... re: the caravan army response.

... and, please, all you Trump supporters... don't make this about left vs. right... this is Trump Republican against real conservatives and democrats. Trump, by the way is more left leaning in many aspects... and, just to note, most fascist parties were created from the left.

Anyway... etc. etc. etc.

SD accused me of not understanding the US, but honestly I seem to be the only one here who does understand.  It is not left vs right, it is Democrat vs Trump.  Republican has nothing to do with it, the GOP is basically defunct.  Trump is the future, and if you don't like it, the alternative is democrat hegemony

Why shut it down now. RFS just made an interesting comment. The thread is very much back to civil discourse.

Pretty much agree. Even the Reagan and Goldwater parts of the south west have gone democrat. Traditional Republicans don't know what to do with themselves. But they will rebuild when Trump's gone, just like the Canadian PCs rebuilt after Mulroney/Campbell. It will be messy but it will happen. There has to eventually be a home for people who subscribe to actual conservative values. Trump is the antithesis of conservatism.

I no, I called you out on saying a reporter has no right acting as a politician. Then you double downed, at which point I said you had no understanding- in reference to how reporters may question not only the President, but the Office of the President.

never going to happen.  The Future of the US is south american, and except for the odd fluke, south american countries vote for left wing governments.

Republicans will be a regional, mid west heartland party

I wouldn't agree with the characterization that South America votes left. Recently there were a lot of elected governments of the left. Now the pendulum is swinging back and a lot of more conservative governments have been elected.

There has been more polarization between right and left in South America than in US or Canada and there has been a stronger tendency for authoritarian populists of the right and left.

You could argue the Trump era does reflect South Americanization of US politics:

  • increased polarization - check
  • charismatic faux populist leader who disparages his internal enemies - check

I dunno about that. Just this year South American countries voted in Bolsonaro (Brazil), Pinera (Chile), Marquez (Colombia), and Benitez (Paraguay).  That's well over half of south america's population electing right leaning governments this year alone.  Add another 50 mil in Argentina under Macri (elected a couple years ago) and another -30 mil from Peru under Vizcarra (who wasn't elected, but was appointed this year).  That's probably 90% of south america governed by right leaning governments.

I agree with posters that say there is no middle ground anymore, and if you are a Republican you must be whacko, misogynist, racist etc. It just ain't so.

If you are a registered Republican you probably voted for a candidate that supported Trump. It should just mean that you prefer a conservative type approach to governing rather than a liberal one.

Nobody suggests Trump is a good public orator, he doesn't play well in public or on social media. That's on him. I am not a Trump fan but the guy I was supporting didn't win the nomination, but I would take any Republican offering over Clinton.

The media paints Trump in the worst light that they can, always inserting negative sounding words where neutral ones would serve the purpose.

The latest was when Trump said he didn't want to listen to the Kashoggi tape, he had been fully briefed on it and it was cruel and suffering. I wouldn't want to listen to it either, same as I don't want to see someone beheaded. The headline on the news crawl - Trump refuses to listen to ...., could have said chooses not to, doesn't want to etc. but they didn't. There are boundless examples of this, which is why I think Trump gets his knickers in a knot with the press.

Wow...Trump has lost some weight!

I like this one.  Seems a little socialist since the man's hat says Union....and I don't know why Ivanka is shown on the right pointing at the Union guy to go away.
