I was clearly referring to cycling as a sport.  Commuters are a different bunch - so are people that go to spin classes.

Victoria has a huge population of road, cross country, and mountain bikers.  These are the people that would use the velodrome.

Yup.  I have basically no interest in this project.  There is absolutely nothing in common, riding a bike for transportation vs engaging in a freak 2-wheeled speed competition on a topographical configuration that does not naturally occur.

Track cycling is like a niche within a niche.

No ... they wouldn't.

Velodromes are built for people who race bicycles in a veloddrome.

Even the most experienced road or trail rider would fall on their head and break something before they even made it once around the track.

ya i don't think a velodrome is for anyone but the most experienced at that type of riding.

Velodrome racing is up there with race walking, synchronized swimming and trampoline for weird/obscure sports. Maybe it's really popular in Europe? Doubt it.

Totally.  If I want to race others in a confined space, I'll just drive down Shelbourne in a car, where the A/C is on and there's GnR playing.  Why in good heavens would I do it on a "bicycle"?

Wait, where exactly is this thing supposed to go? Do they want Saanich to buy all that land and knock all the buildings down for them? Also

The report promises that the facility would help reduce the region’s carbon footprint, because of its accessibility by alternate forms of transport, a point that it underscores by the proposed location is “synergistic” with plans by BC Transit to build a Transit Hub in the area.

implies they want it there for the future transit hub to be nearby but

BC Transit owns about one-third of the facility’s preferred location

would imply Transit plans on using this area for said hub so how do they expect this hub to exist if they're taking the land for it?

Any proposal that uses the term "synergistic" doesn't deserve to see the light of day.

I thought we had both a housing and climate crisis. Is there really money for velodromes?

Regardless, Average Citizen does not get direct input into the decision.

I'm not against the project, but if they do go ahead I expect them to cover their own insurance and licensing instead of freeloading on the majority of us that will never use this infrastructure.

:D

Heh, I was sure someone would leap on this and suggest that the CoV's cycling infrastructure projects were in the same boat. :D
