'MMIW chief commissioner recommends automatic first-degree murder charges for killings of Indigenous women'
In a taste of what’s to come when the national inquiry releases its final report next month, Marion Buller told a parliamentary committee this week that homicides involving Indigenous women must be treated automatically as first-degree murder. She also said that in criminal cases where the complainant is an Indigenous woman, judges must consider that fact as an aggravating factor when sentencing the offender.

I'm OK with that, I'm betting over 90% of the killers were indigenous men.

A young woman who was murdered this past weekend in a Brentwood Bay home was not the intended target, family say.
On Saturday May 11th, at around 12:30 a.m., 20-year-old Emily Caruana was killed in what police say is not a random attack,
According to Sonier, her husband and 4-year-old daughter were visiting his mother, Doris Caruana at her Brentwood Bay home after Doris’ husband Victor passed away on March 14th, 2019.
Their only niece, Emily Caruana and her boyfriend were also visiting Doris to celebrate Mother’s Day with her grandmother.
The five of them had just spent a memorable day together at the museum and the petting zoo before heading back to Doris’ Meadowlark Lane home for the night. At the time of the attack, all five were fast asleep.

so to recap police find 4 adults. including the suspect and the deceased. even though that suspect or someone else had sped off in a white car.
police find 4 adults. but 5 people had gone to bed (one was a minor) and the 4th police found (the suspect) was not one of the 5 that went to sleep.
family says the dead woman was not the target. police say it was not a random attack. then police charge the suspect with 1st degree murder.

Outside of court, McCullough said he is not ruling out a bail application for Berry. He mentioned two of his other clients who are charged with murder and are out on bail, one in Kelowna and one in Nanaimo.
“They are out on bail. One is charged with first and one is charged with second. People who are charged with murder get out on bail,” said McCullough. “It’s not an absolute prohibition.”
