This is what Uptown has been missing, as someone who works and lives very close to uptown this is perfect. Lets just hope prices are decent

As this is in the pubs-bars-19+ venues section rather than the restaurant section, does that mean this is going to be a bar/pub with bowling?  Or is it going to be a restaurant with bowling?  "Dining and entertainment complex" doesn't tell us anything.

11 lanes seems low though. I hope this happens and Rec room as well (say, combined with a Silver City, over at University Heights or Hillside area).

Interesting. The ownership group just opened their first restaurant in Fort Mac in June. It is about 1/3rd the size, has 6 lanes and employs 150 staff.

Big difference between food-primary and liquor-primary; even after the rules changes of a few years ago.

There's also some requirement that only a certain percentage of the overall customer count can be served drinks only in a food-primary.  It used to be that someone at the table had to order food, but that went away - so now if a couple of people go into a restaurant and only have drinks it's OK but if everyone does it the restaurant will get in trouble.

that sounds right.  but probably if you are open normal daytime hours you are ok on that.  i think you have to have proper seating for everyone too.  you can't run a restaurant with an occupant load of 200 but only have 125 seats.  some fuzziness here comes with having a lounge endorsement.

Saanich staff report is scant on details but it does include the proposed floor plans. It's online: https://www.saanich....chaug1219rc.pdf

Looks to be a pub with bowling (and a shuffleboard I think), as the application is for Food Primary.

If it's food-primary then it's a restaurant with bowling.  A pub is a place where you go to get a beer; a pub with bowling would be liquor-primary.

(one of my pet peeves is these places that call themselves pubs but are in fact just disguised restaurants)

The rules have changed so you no longer need to look like a traditional restaurant with your food primary license.

To put things in perspective, ask yourself what the physical difference is between the Sticky Wicket's horseshoe bar and adjacent table seating, and a Browns Crafthouse with its bar and adjacent table seating? The truth is there is no difference.

Food primary doesn’t even need a live music endorsement anymore as far as I know. It’s basically the Wild West out there, as long as you have an operating kitchen and a full menu with entrees.

Physically, there's very little difference at all; and that's just the problem when I-the-consumer can go with some friends into one establishment and spend the evening drinking beer (on the assumption that's what the place is there for) without anyone batting an eyelid but will probably get asked to leave the other establishment on doing the same thing.

Put another way: when listing the current pubs/bars in Greater Victoria, what counts and what doesn't?  Does the Shark Club count?  Original Joe's in Gordon Head?  McRae's on Shelbourne?

nobody will ask you to leave if you just have beers anywhere.  it's fine.  as long as you don't get drunk and troublesome.

You can sit and drink in one of these places all day. So long as they serve enough food overall throughout the day the duffs can hang out all they want.
