I don't see the Pat Bay becoming much more than it is now as there are multiple roads to access the peninsula much of which is ALR.
However, if an alternative route to the Malahat is a bridge to Saltspring....

^its also the major point of access for Victoria with the airport and the ferry at the tip
generally speaking thou its not a big deal for me because from my house at Butchart Gardens to Uptown is around 12-14 minutes at rush hour. Its the pathetic street light timing once I enter the CoV that makes it a pain
but generally you are right, there really isn't much of a need to make the Pat Bay into a freeway if they don't put a bridge at the end of it somewhere

There would have to be frontage roads built, for sure.
I think the only stretch with driveways is between Elk Lake and Mitchell’s farm, no?
There's driveways and minor accesses on the east side from about Haliburton to Sayward, then on both sides from Sayward to about Martindale (and there might be a few further north, I'm not sure). There's also several nasty uncontrolled left turns across traffic - the Elk Lake rowing club turnoff, Tanner Rd, Keating X Rd, East Saanich Rd going northbound, and a couple southbound whose street names I forget right now.

Another day, another Malahat closure. Fortunately not accident related today, but rather due to falling rock.

The earthquake did it.

It's good to see that mother nature agrees that the highway should be properly widened and has begun blasting its own rock faces. How much does a stick of dynamite cost? The BC government just saved that much. Thanks mother nature!

The rock has been moved and the highway reopened at 11:30

A northbound vehicle has rolled near the Shawnigan Lake turnoff.
Crews are now on-scene.

let me guess, the highway is shut again?

What we need is a fixed date for all truckers who want to participate in the Malahat Madness Roll Over, so that we can get it over with.

Drive B.C. isn't indicating the Malahat is closed right now, and the cams don't seem to show any sort of major traffic back-up.
Maybe it rolled right off the road.
Vancouver Island has nearly 800,000 people living on it these days ... might be time to do something to ensure the major transportation route, to and from the Islands major population center remains open 24/7/365 regardless of traffic issues?

This is three days in a row now with a morning incident. Monday was the rock fall with full closure, yesterday was a car into the ditch, and today a rollover.
No closures yesterday or today, but bid traffic delays nonetheless.

It's time to get arborists into the overhanging trees and do some safety pruning along the highway right-of-way.
There shouldn't be much of a delay.

I think if you started a provincial party that had a platform of only two points you could win a handful of seats. Feel free to take this and run:
Platform
1. Expand and/or find an alternate route to the Malahat
2. Replace the Massey tunnel.
You'd likely get my vote, as I'm not impressed with anyone else out there right now.

#1 is so vague it technically includes what they're doing now. Ridiculously slowly expanding it.
