But it raises a valid point. Cowichan is a community stuck in the middle of single route in, single route out.

84,000 people live in the Cowichan Valley and surrounds. They need reliable transportation in and out of the Cowichan Valley.

Half an hour in perfect traffic to Cassidy and the airport there ... and an hour in perfect traffic to Victoria International.

A Cowichan Valley airport seems a no-brainer.

I think Mike is absolutely correct when he states that Vancouver Islands major transportation infrastructure is not only breaking ... but is (in many places) already broken.

It may have all worked 20 or 30 years ago ... but now with a total population of over three quarters of a million people, Vancouver Island (from a transportation perspective) is indeed quite broken.

The important thing to consider (IMO) when pondering this topic is not how well things work when there are no accidents or issues ... but rather what happens when an accident or issue occurs. As we have all experienced at one point or another ... Vancouver Island locks up tight when a major accident occurs, and depending on where you live, where you're traveling to, and where the accident or issue occurs ... you are more often than not prevented from getting to where you're going in the time frame you were planning on getting there in (if you can get there at all).

497 people clicked "join" to a Facebook group. Is that significant public support?).

Anyways, VV's Facebook poll shows just how out of touch the "mounting opposition" is. 90% are in favour of a detour.

So your poll is indicative and the opposition group isn't? 497 in a very short period of time is a large number

all probably true.  except your driving speed to victoria.

but there is a lot of opposition to making roads bigger or making more of them.  or making new airports.

It's not a short period, it's a very long period (92 days, to be precise, or not even six memberships per day for what is being billed as a major issue). Yikes.

VV's Facebook poll on the topic of a detour route has generated over 600 votes in an hour and 15 minutes. Now that's a large number for 75 minutes, and it's getting larger by the minute.

I'd wager that if someone were to create a group called Taxpayers in Support of a Malahat Detour it would hit 500 members in a single day and be up to 10,000 within a month.

it should be an emergency back-up route only open to prevent total closure..  while work continues on the existing main route to also make it better..

The existing route is probably unfixable - far too many minor (and-or private) access points, far too many left-turn-across-traffic opportunities, and there probably isn't an answer for the Goldstream Park-Tunnel Hill section or for Malahat village.

Build a whole new highway and have the existing route become the backup.

Over 1,200 votes now, 87% of which are pro-detour according to VV's Facebook page.

Once again demonstrating a lack of climate leadership, the provincial government now wants to punch a HIGHWAY through the CRD-protected Sooke Hills Wilderness Regional Park Reserve!

Over 2,100 people cast a vote in our Facebook poll, with 87% supporting a detour.

So the powers that be will choose the status quo then.

Yeah, lets spend a ton of money on a road that is only open in a emergency said no one ever.

An unscientific assessment of the make-up of responders to an unscientific poll is used to underpin why that poll is unscientific.

Have you studied the demographics of VV's 26,000+ Facebook page fans, Corey? If not, how would you know what the make-up of the page's fans are, who among them voted, and whether they consider themselves pro or anti-car?

Its funny that local government politicians and their fanboys are simply tone deaf to what the South Island population wants. They are so entrenched in their ideology they forget that they are there to 'serve' the people ..... all the people....not just their acolytes.

Why did they even float the idea of an alternate route? There isn't going to be one we all know it. You can't build anything anymore in this country.

That's populism and it's very wrong and hateful and stuff like that. Only acceptable opinions cooked up by experts are allowed.
