Not really the point. They are 'playing politics" when it comes to cameras and taking the easy way out. Would you care   about the cost if it saved a loved ones life - or should it all be about how much we can save by using the camera's we already have (while looking fiscally responsible by doing it.)?

I care about saving the watershed and wildlife habitat not the $$$.  Your replies don't need to be rude and or condescending davidN.

Just have police cars parked at the side of the road every mile or so. Maybe one or two will be manned - you won't know which tho.

Next time they are getting a new fleet keep a bunch of the old ones for this purpose.

Horgan says the mixed messaging from the CRD isn’t helping. The CRD wants a better road but doesn’t want to allow an expansion through the park. So...?

It sounds to me like Horgan wants to fix the mess and he’s going to do it in whatever capacity he can with the most efficient use of public funds. And no, running a road way west of the Malahat isn’t a reasonable solution.

Well he sure the hell can't put one east of it...

I still think the best option is to take half the traffic off with a bridge from the peninsula and if necessary, some upgrades for Hwy 17 (at the very least, full interchanges).

Running modern rail totally would be. I just took the Islandlink Bus to Nanaimo and back this weekend and would have much preferred a seat on a train.

OMG ain't that the truth. The train was 1000 times more enjoyable than the bus.

And how would that stop a drunk driver? or a truck losing its brakes? or bald tires in a rain storm? Driver inattention? etc etc.

Speed may be an issue but its not the problem thats closing this road. Its the fact this road was built for 1/2 the traffic that currently uses it and theres no alternate route.

Build a new bypass route like the Nanaimo bypass....2 lanes divided from Westshore Parkway to Shawnigan Lake intersection and return the Malahat to the tourist goat trail it should be

What about the bridge to Brentwood option?

Sometimes I think the political/administrative consequences are the main reason why that hasn't been pursued. Would the regional district boundaries be adjusted? Would the (gasp) CMA boundary be adjusted?

It would certainly make the case for a Costco on the northern peninsula, wouldn't it?

The southern Cowichan Valley should also ready in Victoria's CMA. It's absurd that it isn't.

Too many rich NIMBYs on and around Lands End Road...

It is the ideal solution though.

Perhaps not, but removing all the uncontrolled accesses and private driveways is.  Best to start again with a proper limited access higyway or freeway and have done with it.

There will not be a detour announced. The TC ran a piece today about the detour report coming out, but it'll be a nothingburger. There's just no business case for a detour that will cost millions to build and maintain while diverting traffic who knows where while still not solving the problem.

But the government will be identifying improvements to the Malahat that will include several options, even though several will be impractical:

- bridge over Finlayson Arm

- expansion of the existing highway

- overpass at Shawnigan Lake

- a detour via Sooke from Shawnigan

- a detour via existing roads and logging roads through the watershed and Goldstream

Over the near term we'll see more dividers along the Goldstream Park and a widening of the existing single lanes that run through it. There will also be a push for more dividers in the Malahat lookout area heading into Bamberton.

All it will take is one landslip where the road will be closed for a period of days to show how wrong they are.
