Professional geologists speculate that this particular valley is vulnerable because it is surrounded by mountains.

Why would a TCH closure north of Duncan require commentary on an alternate Malahat route?

Why would a TCH closure north of Duncan require commentary on an alternate Malahat route?

Numerous closures along that route as well as serious flooding at Goldstream Park, combined with the road closed to Pt Renfrew etc. All of these minor events combined with seismic instability of that route and MVI's etc expose the weak underbelly of having a single route connecting the south island....thats why

You currently cannot drive between Victoria and Nanaimo without the TCH. There is no accessible network of roads to do so. Once you hit Ladysmith you’re forced to get back onto the highway. Just like the Malahat, you’re forced to take it.

Those with keys to gated logging roads could, but that’s it. And you could go through Port Alberni via logging roads, but that’s a massive detour. It’s also not fit for the average vehicle.

I just don’t understand how we continue to rely on a single road.

because 99.8% of the time that single road is fine and open.  make a good case for spending $1 billion on another road and folks will listen.  link it to a new 30,000-home community to relieve the housing crisis and it makes sense.  that's only $33,300 per new home to have it connected.

Doesn’t have to be a billion dollar road, just connect two roads in Oyster Bay so that once you cross over the highway in Ladysmith you now have a means of crossing back over and using another parallel route at Cassidy without having to rely 100% on the highway.

And therein lies the conundrum for the anti car politicians. Thats exactly why they are fighting against a new road as it would open up massive amounts of new land that could be developed and increase traffic and impact their revenues, not to forget a new community that may not fall under their power.

So consider most other parts of the world that are developed, like the UK where there are many new road and rail projects under way all the time...they understand that you dont stop improving...

One road to Duncan.

One road to Sooke.

One road to Renfrew.

One road to Alberni.

One road to Tofino.

One road to McNeill.

One road to Hardy.

But two roads from Campbell River to Nanaimo, one of which is a four lane superhighway. Meanwhile some spilled milk will cut off 400,000 people a stone’s throw from Langford’s town centre.

Gosh golly, we’re in such bad shape here, and people wonder why they can’t get a rail line to operate? We don’t even have adequate major roads. And our arterials in town are goat trails that have been clogged for generations.

Westshore RCMP said the motorcycle was in the northbound lane of the highway when it crashed into the median about 2:45 p.m. The driver and passenger suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

Multiple ambulances responded, according to B.C. Emergency Services, and paramedics found one of the riders had died. The other person was taken to hospital in critical condition.

A trailer or a container has rolled on the Malahat near Okotoks Road.

There’s a drivebc webcam still of the incident: https://drivebc.ca/m...ams/id/909.html

Concurrently Highway 14 is snarled due to an MVI in an area of the highway without a detour.

Our infrastructure is a hot mess.

Is the infrastructure a hot mess or just the users of the infrastructure?
