Hopefully news will get out and it will scare people from moving here.

It looks like lots of folks from the interior are eyeing the Island as the next best thing.

The Danbrook engineer guy wasn't busy, so worked on it overnight.

Stirling went for the jugular today, playing clips of C. Isitt supporting a 2019 motion before the CRD from a Salt Spring Island CRD director calling for the rejection of a Malahat detour.

As Stu Young said at the time, the way the debate was structured is it put the decision making power into the hands of the CRD, absolving the province from having to make a decision on the project, but giving the province an 'out' by saying it had engaged the south Island community.

My idea to drill a tunnel through the Malahat to Mill Bay doesn't seem so dumb now.

  1. An increased reliance on personal automobile transportation has a positive impact on climate change.
  2. Climate change leads to increased weather severity and storm events.
  3. Increasingly powerful storms damage transportation infrastructure, leading to drastic economic impacts.

Solution? Build even more vehicle transportation infrastructure which encourages even more driving, and repeat steps 1 through 3.

Yeah, that's all good, but everything you own, everything you consume, everything you eat is because we are no longer a horse and buggy society. And we need to look to the future, like the EV revolution. For a forward thinking and advanced society we're a bit archaic with regards to infrastructure, don't you think?

With all due respect, the route between Victoria and Nanaimo is fairly essential at this time. A significant amount of goods, including food, ships from the mainland through Nanaimo and having a reliable road to deliver it on is extremely important. I understand the concept of induced demand but this doesn't really apply in this situation.

Can we not move some ferries around to create a Victoria-Nanaimo get-up via Tsawwassen (if we have to, or just straight on through)? Things aren't that busy right now.

Is there that much demand at that time of night? Now that people know of the closures, they can plan around them.

Although the thought did cross my mind last night - but with ferries already running 2 hours late because of the wind, that would have meant no vessels would have been available until around 1am - if crews could be sourced I think at that point most people would have just preferred to call it a night, find accommodation, and figure things out in the morning. No excess capacity because it's the time of year that vessels are undergoing annual refits.

Re: a potential Malahat detour, how many times a year are we facing both Malahat & Spirit route closures? Maybe 20 hours a year on average? Exorbitant price per hour of blockage to build an alternate route. Especially when we are generally quite resilient and can react relatively quickly. Ferries all night were crewed and announced within a few hours.. I imagine some creativity could be achieved if there was a larger blockage where they couldn't have opened up single lane traffic today such as the above-suggested Victoria to Nanaimo ferry.

Final point, given that every single pass in and out of the mainland and a few on the island were affected, the likelihood that this rain event would also have impacted the alternative route seems quite high. In which case all those tax dollars spent would have resulted in zero net benefit.

Yeah, that was a mistake on DriveBC’s end. The highway was closed until 3:20 when Emcon announced the sinkhole had been addressed.
