The CoV desperately needs a voice on council that doesn't come from another Ben Isitt clone. I can only hope the voters of Victoria realize this.

An account suggests one of the men who was approached by a City employee yesterday on Dallas Road became quite angry and had to be talked down by another camper.

and this is part of the issue.. safety.. and when people get politely told to move along they become quite angry... this is an area with no running water and no washroom facilities.. and those in converted vehicles (not actual RV's.. and even some in RV's) don't offer the facilities needed.... if you wish to have the "vanlife" then be mobile, and be respectful of those around you and all the bylaws that come with it

During the last general election, Together Victoria were pretty vague on how much they would manipulate the new real estate market. Stephanie Hardman is much more explicit about that in her campaign materials. Therefore, I think there's a path to victory for a pro-development centrist. Someone like Bruce McGuigan or Stephen Andrews if they can come off as progressive enough not to scare voters to Hardman. (I think running with Mr. Mad As Hell is what sunk Andrews last time - he'll be more successful as an independent.)

I blame the media for that - they painted Stephen Hammond that way, and it really wasn't fair.  This city has become a place where people have to petition to get bylaws enforced.  It has become a place where any option shy of enablement is painted as NIMBYISM.  Advocating for safe, clean, neighbourhoods where people want to be isn't about being NIMBY it's about wanting a functional city.

Rachael Montgomery was out door knocking today. She struck me as pretty solid. First thing I asked was whether she had anything to do with TV. She grinned and assured me she did not. Then she asked me what my priorities were and took notes. We chatted for a while and I felt like she was realistic and down to earth. Her web page is heavy on platitudes and I don't think it really does justice to the candidate herself.

Anyway, she is definitely not another woke nincompoop and is thus a refreshingly different candidate. That's good enough for me, at least for now.

The thing Stephen Andrew has going for him is he's effectively not starting from scratch, he's definitely not unknown around the city.

I say this because Andrew already has a substantial profile in Victoria, especially in the media and in the arts community, as well as in the medical support community.

If you know Andrew personally, you'll vote for him because you already know he's a man of conviction, and more-so that he's actually dead serious about reforming Victoria city council.

If you don't know him personally, you're still likely aware of his lengthy career as a newscaster, and also his expertise in other areas as a result of his individual enterprises over the years.

Like anybody running for council, his platform is easily accessed on his website. The hard part for a candidate is standing out from the rest, something Andrew already does as a result of his already well known status.

Whether he'd win or not might depend on whether the TV machine was prepared to invest everything they have, and everybody they have - with the express task of beating him.

Even then, it would ultimately hinge on whether residents of Victoria have finally come to realize what they've done by electing TV, Helps, Isitt, and Loveday - as they've watched TV enact their mission to re-make Victoria into the most attractive city in Canada for homeless criminals and drug dealers, those with untreated mental illness, and those who are simply lazy and don't want to work, those who are happy to live on handouts. Basically residents who've watched the current council (minus T.J., Alto, and Young) literally destroy their city.

It's time for Stephen Andrew to join Alto, T.J., and Young at the table, initially to bring balance to council, but ultimately to turf TV and their ilk out on their asses.

I fear for the City of Victoria if TV manages to get their candidate in. Victoria is almost too late to fix right now - I can't imagine how "broke" Victoria will be as a city after 3 more years of consistantly spiral downhill.

If Montgomery or Andrew can stop our council from completely morphing into the Uvic Students' Society, I will be eternally grateful.

I tried to find Isitt's twitter, but unless I'm mistaken, it's vanished again. When the going gets tough....he disappears.

The by-election that time was happening at the same time as the referendum on the bridge which I think drove the vote up.   I think a turnout of 10% to 13% is realistic.   This means a turnout of about 8,000.   3,000 votes should be enough to have a decent chance of winning

Stephen Andrew got 9,000 votes in 2018. If a third of those voters come back he could win. It would be a close race. He needs to get his butt in gear.

Not sure on Rachel - there's stuff I'd like to know but don't, like what has she done before this?  She's been a nurse, but what experience does she have in local advocacy or advocacy more broadly.  Her page is bit scant on that, on accomplishments.  That Karen McNamera who is a failed TV candidate, has endorsed her, again causes pause for thought.  There's a paucity of public comment from her on issues, so its really tricky to get a feel for where she stands.  There is no twitter account, and her facebook page is like the website.  I'm not getting a lot of thoughtful depth about her positions.  The thing about Steven is, we know where he stands, he's been a very public figure and has provided his thoughts on the issues impacting Victoria - there's a transparency to that I like.  Now if he could just throw his hat in the ring, it would be good.  Note - I think the non-TV candidates should, if the goal is not TV be willing to meet together and choose between themselves the person who has the best chance of beating TV - and if they aren't willing to do that, that should send a message that their candidacy is more about being a foil to allow TV to retain its seat.

Well, I guess it’s time that I wade into this discussion.

I want to be totally transparent where I’m at, hence no official or unofficial announcement at this time.

I honestly thought I would not run when I was previously responded to questions and /or requests to jump in. Like many thoughts expressed here, I have been dealing with that conflict in my mind.

My last run encouraged my to think about it again once I dealt with the emotion and disappointment of 9th place finish.

Then came information about some questionable election financing I will leave that there for others to comment or investigate, but the information I received troubles me greatly.

I will have more to say in the next two days, meetings and a very tough conversation with my husband still to be had.

I’m leaning to “Yes”, but, as I’m sure you can appreciate, these decisions are not made in isolation.

Thank you to all the nice comments. Thanks for the constructive criticism. And yes, I “need to get my butt in gear”,

Stephen

Well, it certainly makes me feel better to know that Stephen might be running. He has my vote if he does.

Once again, the balanced/centrist side needs to work on their graphic design. Honestly, wtf is this? Can someone on here who’s even slightly talented in graphic design please contact them to help

And we agree (that must be a first). TV runs rings around just about anybody else - they have a strong design language that they use consistently. This is a city bursting with people who do this kind of stuff. It really isn't hard.

Yes, you need professional design assistance. Next Council also suffered in that regard.

What Together Victoria has is a strong group of volunteers.   Realistically a centre or centre right candidate needs a couple hundred volunteers and a clear campaign plan.   People opposed to Together Victoria need to work harder than them.    One reason Lisa Helps won as mayor in 2018 is because she had more people volunteer on her campaign than all the rest of the campaigns combined.

Together Victoria starts ahead which means anyone else wanting to win has to work like crazy on the ground.
