Britain cancelled the 1940 election and formed a bi-partisan war cabinet. They were ten years between elections.

The recent Wisconsin election shows that even at the peak of the pandemic and with sloppy hygiene protocols, voting seemed to generate only a handful of fresh cases rather than the dangerous spike predicted by some. I think Victorians can safely go to the polls in a few months unless we begin to see signs of a second wave coming.

It has already changed the focus for candidates. By election day we will witness the fallout of two events: the rehabilitation of the local economy and the transfer of tent city residents to area motels. These are fast-moving events and the election results might likely be different if the election were held now, six months from now or next year.

Thankfully this is 2020 and not 1940 many advances have been made in telecommunications that make holding a byelection feasible even in pandemic times.

While that may be true, the opportunity for influence or coercion is too great for rolling out an Internet-based ballot.

Know it all.

this is what I say too. secret ballot is the only way to go. nobody can ever know who you vote for. that’s a real part of our voting integrity people always forget.

My greatest fear for the byelection is that it won't be clear who is who, or who they are aligned with.

E.g. last election we had a slick campaign for those happy, cheerful, non-threatening candidates under the Together Victoria banner. And three of them won, and it fairly quickly became evident that their sole purpose was to create a solid Helps/Isitt/Loveday/TV Iron Curtain, thereby erasing any traces of moderation, bullying dissenting views into submission.and allowing Ben and Lisa to play out some of their extremist dictator fantasies in a small scale.

So I am worried that whenever we eventually get a byelection we will get:

Mr. Andrew, a moderate voice, whom Ben and Lisa's brownshirts will inevitably try to paint as some sort of angry right-winger.
The TV candidate, freshly activated from Ben's laboratory and ready to do his bidding. "Yes, master, tell me what I must do..."
The inevitable wingnuts, clowns, etc.
Possibly one or more other bland, touchy-feely candidates blathering vaguely about housing, livable communities or whichever buzzwords, but you won't really know who is pulling their strings.

Honestly, if you are concerned, truly concerned, it’s not enough to simply vote, you have to get out and work to elect a candidate you believe in.

Oh, rest assured, I plan to.

Not sure I'd trust Jeremy Caradonna or Rachael Montgomery to handle CoV finances very well based on their campaign expenditures. It goes without saying the TV group would be poor money managers.

Interesting--this is a unique opportunity to get a glimpse inside each campaign's funding. Strange to see candidates who drain their own or their spouse's bank account with no other source of funding. It would appear nobody else, not even their closest friends, associates or family have faith in the campaign.

One contributor (daughter?) appears to be a Grade 9 student. Two others also appear to be youths. All have the same last name and made multiple contributions of around $1,200.

Yeah, it looks like one of them just graduated Grade 5. And already has thousands of dollars to contribute! Considering she ran a nil campaign in 2014, and a self-funded campaign of about $775 in 2018, I'm highly skeptical of this report...

If you have the funds to run your own campaign then why take money from others? This way you avoid the favours and “asks” which seem to come with the territory.

Do you think it is just a coincidence that developers funded certain campaigns in 2014 and 2018 and for some reason the City hasn’t been able to collect any significant CAC’s or housing funds as an example?!

Has there been any indication from current COV Mayor of Council regarding a potential date for the by-election?

...or as simple as stating out loud what they're planning to do about it?

One might posit that current Mayor and Council are hesitant to upset the existing apple cart, likely "afraid" of having Stephen A. on Council along with them.

Right now Council is an echo chamber with the exception of Geoff Young, who the current Council has effectively turned into a completely ineffective outlier.

It's definitely time to get the by-election underway again, as it's transitioned from a justifiable COVID-19 delay into a painfully obvious and unjustifiable "fear of who might get elected" delay.

I'm sure they love having minimal diversity of opinions. Was it just me or was there a smugness about the celebratory moment after the 2018 election. It felt as if, with the TV candidates installed, Helps and Isitt were gleeful about quashing any significant dissent.

Also, re BHP, are they now timing the tent city fiascos to be 2 years away from a general election, hoping voters will forget?

I do have a feeling though that they might have overplayed their hand a little this time, but we shall see...

No, I don't think there has been any indication about rescheduling any of the municipal by-elections. Remember that Victoria's was one of three cancelled by order of the Province. The order goes on to say that the by-elections will proceed after the public health officer advises that COVID-19 no longer poses a threat to public health...
