Congratulations to all the candidates who ran. It’s hard work, even more so in the midst of a pandemic, and you all should be proud. Congrats to councillor-elect
@stephen_andrew. Welcome to the council table.

What a relief. I was surprised when TV and friends had such a big showing of support during the last election. Are Victorians finally ticked off enough?

It's like Christmas came early!
When is the first council meeting? Stephen can you find out why downtown is devoid of decorations and point out that it wasn't a good decision considering our small businesses are already struggling?

Congratulations to Stephen. A bit of light!
I would like to know about Christmas decorations also. I spent a couple of hundred dollars downtown yesterday, doing my part for local business. Would have been nice to see some.

Boy, was I ever off on the vote count. The spread between the two candidates was huge.
Posted 13 December 2020 - 08:35 AM
Godron got 22 votes. Not 22 percent mind you, twenty-two individual votes. You will recall in the disclosure statement for the cancelled spring election her family maxed out their contributions with thousands of dollars earmarked for salaries, wages and "professional expenses". We don't know what the current expenses are yet but I have never seen such a huge investment yield such dismal results in a municipal election.

Also of note is the terrible overall performance of candidates outside the "top two". Roshan Vickery did reasonably well, I guess. I think he should happier than the numbers indicate because this election turned out to be a referendum on TV so a very high number of votes went to Andrew and Hardman. People weren't messing around with other candidates like in past elections. I think if Roshan runs again in 2022 he will do much better.

Ms Godron has run for civic office many times now and this is probably her poorest showing to date. Perhaps it's time she finally threw in the towel.

I could support that as long as he displaces an existing or future TV candidate (this also includes Benemy)

And we did not see as many of the traditional perennial candidates we've been used to, like Steve Filopovic, Rose Henry and Saul Anderson, the cab driver. All three have had their core group of followers and could be counted on to have an impact. Filopovic got over 2,200 votes in the 2010 by-election which was an impressive result for someone who runs amateurish campaigns. But no sign of any of them this time and without them the top two harvested an impressive vote count.

A by-election is like a referendum in that you only have one vote. In a regular election you get eight choices so it's easy to vote for a half-dozen of your favourite candidates and then throw a bone to a joke candidate.
No joking around this time. No coin-flippers at the ballot box I can assure you.

It's just interesting that like Riga, Rose Henry is also an Indigenous woman who does a lot of volunteer work. But every and I mean every municipal election Rose could count on getting thousands of votes with a zero budget campaign. Even in the 2010 by-election she got 1,800 votes.

Yes I think everyone thought it would be a closer race. This was huge.
This was a message to council, and a pretty loud one at that.
I'm no analyst but such a poor turnout, plus such a big number of votes for Stephen, suggests people have been activated by Jereben and TV.
Time to start organizing for 2022. It's going to take a long time to clean this up.

Agreed. I just hope this same momentum will still be around in 22 months.
