Mods: this project was approved at last night's council meeting.
The Harris Green neighbourhood will be adding more rental housing, after Victoria’s city council gave the green light this week to a 162-unit rental building on the site of a former downtown bottle depot.
The project, put forward by J. Gordon Enterprises at the southwest corner of View and Vancouver streets, will see a six-storey market rental building built on a vacant lot, in what the developers call a rejuvenation of the site.
The project passed unanimously at council Thursday night, despite concerns about parking from area residents, some exhausted by the sheer volume of development in the neighbourhood in the last five years. With redevelopment of the 900-block of Yates Street also on the horizon, some complained the project will mean what little parking is available will be under more pressure.

The transformation of the Harris Green neighbourhood continues as a six-storey, 162-unit market rental building was approved by council at its Feb. 10 meeting.
Developer J. Gordon Enterprises’ project, planned for the southwest corner of Vancouver and View streets, includes 33 studio apartments, 98 one-bedroom units, 23 two-bedrooms, seven ground-floor two-bedroom suites and one three-bedroom apartment. Responding to a question about affordability, the applicant told council about 20 per cent of the one-bedroom rentals will go for less than $1,500.
Company vice-president Don Butt said the goal is to provide a practical choice for people at all stages of life and bring housing to an “under-utilized site.”

^ Will the 20% of units below $1,500 be in writing and enforced by the City contractually?!

Love the fact that space is finally being developed and eventually some life and street level activity injected into what to now has been a section of View Street where energy and vitality went to die; OTOH I don't at all love the rendering of the project at the beginning of this thread - is it still slated to look like, um...well.....like that?

Aesthetically speaking, View Towers has set the bar pretty low for the 900 block of View Street.

Marginally better but "just"; the original looked like a combination of a Borg Cube and a mental institution circa 1961. The balconies here at least soften it up a bit. The trees/landscaping helps too....
