No one needs to hear Olympic opinions from the 2020 General Election Silver Medalist.

who is up watching the game?

That was one of the worst penalty shootouts I have ever witnessed...good golly Miss Molly!

That being said, happy to see the Canadian victory in the end.

the *official* world's greatest athlete is of course the winner of the modern pentathlon

we plebeians call that event "the private school half-decathlon"

Damian Warner’s training base is a 66-year-old unheated hockey arena that the City of London flagged for potential demolition more than a decade ago.

But it’s come to feel like home to the Canadian decathlon star in this bizarre Olympic year.

When COVID-19 forced Warner out of the University of Western and prevented him from crossing the border for warm-weather training in the U.S., Warner’s coach Gar Leyshon — with the help of “about 100 people” — built a multi-events facility in the spartan Farquharson Arena.

“Picture a really cold ice rink. And then take out the ice. That’s where we are,” Warner laughed.

our 2008 men's eight rowing team trained in an condemned building on the camosun campus which was also eventually demo'd; there's no doubt a certain ambiance to those places that makes it much more conducive to "getting down to business" than a comfortable, shiny, polished "exercise studio" with lots of chrome, plants, TVs, a dress code, "no swearing" policy, etc. metallica recorded st anger in an old army barracks on the presidio that probably had a very similar feel, and that album definitely has a different sound from their previous ones.

I watched a fair amount of the Olympics this summer as I knew a few people competing.

During the television coverage I saw a pool, a track and field stadium, a velodrome and a baseball diamond. They all looked pretty much to me like any other pool, track and field stadium, etc.

The one thing I did not see during any coverage on any channel were any vignettes on japan. Not a single segment to provide me with any motivation to visit or do any business in that country.

You would think that for a country that just lost in excess of $20B hosting the games that might have been important. It should also be a reminder for us when we get the inevitable pitches to host our own games what a financial farce they actually are.

At future Olympics, algorithms could be doling out gold medals instead of judges
Diving might be one of the first sports to have automated judging using computer vision technology, which has already transformed how athletes, coaches, and fans at home understand their favorite sports.

And we could have robots competing instead of people.

CBC has record-breaking digital audience for Tokyo Olympics

https://www.cbc.ca/s...tings-1.6135953

NBC Draws Its Lowest Summer Olympics Ratings Ever for Tokyo Games TV viewership down 42% from 2016; NBC executive said Olympics will still ‘will be very, very profitable’

https://www.wsj.com/...mes-11628547501

Ratings so far have generally been lower than for past Olympics, with the declining broadcast landscape and 13-hour time difference between Tokyo and the Eastern time zone being definite factors. CBC’s audience of 1,010,000 for Friday’s opening ceremony in prime time was down from the 1,254,000 who watched the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games opener and way down – not surprisingly given that it was in a matching time zone – from the 3,337,000 CBC viewers who watched the start of the Rio Summer Games in 2016.

Given the lockdown of travel due to COVID, the ability for roving reporters to get any local flavour was probably not worth the effort.

If you need motivation to visit Japan, I can assure you that it's one of the greatest places in the world to go for a trip. Safe and friendly, excellent food and super interesting stuff, both modern and historical.

The basketball final was weird. One of the biggest sporting events of the year and the only sound is squeaking shoes and the players calling each other. It had all the excitement and ambiance of a high school practice.

I am sure that the local tourism groups had hundreds of hours of footage available if asked.

I point out the lack of promotion simply to address the argument that tourism revenue due to Olympic events is what justifies the ever increasing costs.

Oh, absolutely, no argument there. I'm surprised that the olympic broadcast contracts don't explicitly state a requirement for a certain amount of tourism marketing and local flavour segments for the host country.

It's those informative colour vignettes that keep you watching though between periods of the handball semis.

Former U.S. women’s national team player Hope Solo said during a podcast last week that she saw teammate Megan Rapinoe "almost bully" players into kneeling for the national anthem.

"I've seen Megan Rapinoe almost bully players into kneeling because she really wants to stand up for something in her particular way, but it's our right as Americans to do it in whatever way we're comfortable with," Solo said on "All of US: The U.S. Women's Soccer Show" last Tuesday.

Canadian gymnasts echo growing call for investigations into abusive practices, toxic culture

https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6399721

Alternate headline:

Canada won’t win any medals if coaching is soft, politically correct

It’s not a fuc**ng daycare at the Olympic level.
