december 3 2019 - victoria news

At the end of November, the congregations of Cadboro Bay and St. Aidan’s United Churches held simultaneous votes on amalgamation with results in favour of the proposal by 87 per cent and 79 per cent, respectively.

The new congregation has yet to be named but will occupy the soon-to-be revitalized site of St. Aidan’s United Church near the corner of Cedar Hill Cross and Richmond roads.

Beginning in the late summer or early fall of 2020, both congregations will temporarily relocate to Cadboro Bay’s Arbutus Road site while renovation takes place at the permanent location. The new church will be the largest United Church on Vancouver Island.

The formal day for the union has been set for May 31.

Congregations in both parishes voted in November to join by 87 per cent at St. Aidan’s and 80 per cent at Cadboro Bay.

No name has been chosen for the new church and no decision has been made on a site — either Cadboro Bay at 2625 Arbutus Rd. or St. Aidan’s at 3703 St. Aidan’s St.  Whatever is eventually decided will require votes by the two parishes.

My mom attends St. Aidan's. What I recall her saying is that they will keep both properties for the time being, since they make good money from renting out the meeting spaces and hosting the annual bazaar at St. Aidan's. They are considering largely consolidating at the Cadboro Bay location but are also considering redeveloping that location. Apparently the St. Aidan's location is high-value, and selling it down the line is a possibility, which is one reason why they deliberately did not seek a cemetery designation which is very difficult to remove.

Passersby on View Street, and those with a clear view of St. Andrew’s Cathedral from downtown Victoria buildings, have likely noticed workers atop the historic church.

Large copper panels, created using a machine that bends and crimps rolled metal in just the right places, are being installed as a replacement for the slate roof that covered the cathedral for 110 years or so.

The new roof is expected to cost between $400,000 and $500,000, according to Chris Ryzuk, a St. Andrew’s parishioner who is helping oversee the project. It’s just the second full roof replacement since the church was built in 1892.

It’s only the second full re-roofing project in the 128-year history of St. Andrew’s. The cathedral’s original roof was tin covering board and batten that lasted for about 25 years. It was replaced with slate.

“The typical lifespan to replace slate is about 100 years, so it’s lasted well,” Ryzuk said.

The cathedral had patches of the roof repaired and replaced in the mid-1980s, but had to use a cheaper tile because the matching slate were not available at the time. The new copper sheets now match the spire, which was clad in copper during the 1980s repairs.

Because the cathedral has provincial and city heritage status, the use of copper had to be approved. The new roof is expected to last more than 100 years.

“We had to ask ourselves how long do we want the roof to last, and what is the cost of the roof versus the cost of maintenance over a long term,” Ryzuk said. “The cathedral rector [Father John Lafzezyk] said 100 years.”

The slate pieces were carefully removed and lowered to ground, where they will be available to parishioners as keepsakes or garden works, he said.

The bells at Christ Church Cathedral won’t ring in the new year this week for the first time in more than 50 years.

The cathedral’s 10 bells are normally rung before every Sunday service and on New Year’s Eve, Christmas, Easter, Victoria Day and Remembrance Day, but they haven’t sounded since B.C.’s restrictions banning all social gatherings were introduced in mid-November.
